Puppy seems hungry My Mollie is almost 16 weeks old and on the bag of dog food it say to give her 3/8 cup a day...but she still seems hungry:(. She will have all that eat by lunch. What am I suppose to do. I hate to think she's not getting enough. |
I know this is probably not a popular answer, but I free feed all of my animals (Jack and his brothers and sister - the cats). In my opinion, they only eat when they are hungry and don't gorge themselves. Jack weighs in at 5 pounds and is perfect at almost 3 years old. I free feed Jack kibble and then give moist once per day. Good luck! |
I free feed also and with puppies I certainly wouldn't limit their food intake. |
Gosh, if I free-fed Zeus he'd pop... O.O He always acts like he's hungry. But he also thinks it's his last meal... :/ |
Puppies don't usually over eat. They may at first if they have been hungry for a while. Let her have more and see how she does with it. Obviously if she starts getting fat you would want to start limiting the amount. The amount on the bag is a guideline. Some dogs need less and some need more. |
Also, the amount on the package is suggested. Every dog and puppy is different. Some have higher metabolisms than others even though they're all full of energy. I also agree to feed her a bit more and see how she does. She's a growing girl. If she starts to get overweight, back off. But if she's hungry at this age, I say go ahead and feed a bit more. Another thought is, if possible, feed her 3 times a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner). |

I have 5 fur kids and I keep a huge bowl of dry kibble down at all times and they eat their moist food twice a day. Their weights very from 15 pounds ( Thor ) to 6 pounds ( Sadie ). Vet says all of them are healthy and not overweight. |
Tatum is free fed too. If you only have one dog then it's easy to see how much they eat. Not sure how that works if you have more.... maybe you'd have to watch to make sure they are sharing enough. |
I've thought about free feeding. I'm just scared she will eat to much.... But I think with this scheduled feeding she is just waiting for and eating all of it at once. I think she may not worry about getting food with free feeding and slow down. |
I free fed my Gina and she was never overweight. Sometimes it took her two days to eat a bowl of kibble. Zoey and Jackson (a maltese) would eat until they pop. Each dog is different but I would try to free feed your little Mollie and see what happens. |
I have always free fed when just owning a single dog and none have been overweight. If they tend to eat more than they should then just leave the empty bowl there until the next day. However once I did have two dogs and as they got older one was getting fat so then I had to go to supervised meal times in the morning and the evening with bowls on opposite ends of the room, it was hard at first since they were used to eating when they wanted, after a few days they got hungry enough and started eating when their bowls were put down. |
When Abby came to us at 11 weeks she was so hungry- She had to fight to get food from a free for all with 5 in the litter. She was tiny but also thin and boney and her hair was dry. Her poops were thin and form-less. I started feeding her 1/4 cup 4 times a day - her poo firmed up and she was more energetic.I adjusted her food as she grew, never starved but always hungry to eat the next meal. At 7 months she eats 1/4 c am- 1/3 cup pm she weighs 5+ lbs and her hair is shiny and smooth . |
