New Question - update as of this morning Hi Everyone, Thanks for your messages last night about my other post (http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=24120)... I ordered Innova and Wellness online and will try to start incorporating them in with his diet. Poor little guy woke up this morning and was acting very strange - he is usually happy in the morning, wants to sniff and lick and play... but this morning he was just ready to go back to sleep. I was laying with him and could hear the acid in his stomach just churning away... He would NOT eat any of his food. It was a couple of hours earlier than his breakfast time but I was trying to get some food in there to settle his tummy. After a couple of hours of trying to coax him into eating/drinking - my husband suggested we try to play with him a little to get him to eat/drink. He was trying to play but he he was also trying to throw up (kind of dry heaving) but there was nothing there. He was also kind of stumbling around at this point and acting very clingy with us (not normal). I was concerned and didn't have any Nutri-cal or Pumpkin (as previously suggested)... so I gave him some of the vitamins the vet gave us (a half a dose) and then grabbed a sample bag of Science Diet Puppy food that someone gave us. He gobbled them down. He wouldn't touch the old (Eukanuba Lamb and Rice Puppy) - even though I tried and tried... So, now he has a new food introduced into his stomach issues and has had lots of water. Do you guys think I did the right thing trying to get him to eat SOMETHING (new food) rather than nothing? I just thought it would be best to try to settle his stomach with food rather than letting him be miserable. What can I do if it bothers his stomach even more? Another question - in terms of slow incorporation of new food... Is this really possible? When I brought him home, he picked out my new food out of the breeders kibbles (and refused to eat the old). Now, he is gobbling down the new and won't touch the old? He didn't have any issues with the first switch but because of the pre-existing tummy issues we have been having the last couple of days...I am worried this switch could be bad. And for the future when I get my Innova and Wellness - should I alternate if he gets bored, use whichever he likes if he won't go for a gradual change? Thanks - all advice appreciated. |
I'm not a lot of help because my hoover of a dog will eat anything, but if he gets a tummy ache again give him a little pepto and then feed him white rice & cottage cheese (this is what my vet told me to do when Logan got sick). If you don't have any nutrical you can use kayro syrup or regular syrup in a pinch. |
When Loki has tummy problems (diahrea) the vet had me fast him for 12-24 hours (he's a healthy 7+ pounds) and then start on plain rice and some boiled chicken. Not sure about constipation though. But it is OK to let them fast depending on their size. Rice will settle the stomach though, so maybe try that? Loki loves rice better than any food or treat, even chicken. We make rice a few times week and he sits in the kitchen and waits patiently for his share! |
well if he is not going to eat...at least make sure he is getting Nutri stat....to prevent hypoglycmia |
He is just under four months and weighs 1 pd 10 ounces. He has vitamin suppliment in liquid form from the vet (that is why I have never invested in nutrical/nutristat)... |
hopefully last question One more question for everyone... after all of the above... He is still eating his Science Diet, drinking lots of water and as of around 6 pm totally playing like his normal self. I think he was more tired today because we were up late last night (1 am) and then this morning he had me up at 5:45 am... Since noon today (it is now 10:20 PM), he has take 5 HUGE pops. They don't like his normal ones (they are bigger) and maybe more of a brown/green color rather than a brown/brown color - but they are pretty firm (maybe a tad softer looking than his normal ones). He definitely has more of a sense of urgency about going (he usually can hold it). Are 5 poops normal in one day? Does this sound normal - or like he will be getting back to normal soon? Thanks for any input! |
It sounds like he is much better! I would probably go ahead and make the switch. Another thing I did when we had potty problems early on was to switch them to bottled water. I bought one gallon, and by the time they had finished it, I put them back on tap and all was well. I think Pepto would be alright, a tiny amount, but I think it is for diarrhea so might not be necessary. I would get a tube of Nutrical (or like) it will last a year or so. I might have said last night that I keep those little bags of moist Pedigree around for when my pups wont eat. I also try anything to make them eat. I guess it is the sign they are getting better. Also, wouldn't worry about number of poops as long as the consistency is good :p |
I would check the concerns with your vet. Your baby might need one of the tummy pills like Tagamet, to reduce acid production. That usually is not used for long term, though. He is too small to fast for 12-24 hours, IMO. Definitely ask about NutriStat or such. Also, you might boil the rice but add enough water to leave some rice broth. Use that in an extra water dish..Keeping him on some nutritious liquid might help. What brought on this episode in the first place. Was he really, really constipated? If so, canned/cooked pumpkin can be used..If he is doing okay with the food change I would keep him on it til the new stuff comes. Then, start all over with trying to gradually change.... |

http://www.naturesvariety.com/ I give my gang the raw in the morning and EVO kibble in the evening. The one thing you will need to do, to be comfortable with the food you give your dog, is to read the labels just like you would for a human. Many of the foods will have a high fat content, sugar and tons of filler (grains). I think it is important to find something that works for you and your baby but the highest quality you can afford. The most important thing is that they eat but remember many dogs really like the poorer quality food and it is very difficult to get them to change once you introduce it to them. Innova and Wellness are good food but I would pick one and stick with that. The one thing almost everyone on this group has is the Nutri-cal. If your little one stops eating, gets woozey or starts going down you need to give them a finger full of this. Sometimes you even have to force feed them. IMO this should be mandatory for any new puppy owner. I just keep my tube in the refrig so it is always handy. This is not just for puppies and I have used it on all aged dogs. "Nutri-Cal is the Veterinary Standard for dogs and cats who won't eat. NutriCal is an energy-packed nutritional supplement which contains the vitamins and minerals your pets needs. Nutrical is also a high calorie supplement designed to provide extra energy as well as nutrition". I hope your little one is feeling better and I know how scary it is when they won't eat or have stomach problems. Good Luck :) |

One thing that I didn't mention is that is a vitamin suppliment intended for hypoglycemia (per the vet) - he gave it to me when I had the pup home for the first day.... Because of this, I never invested in nutra cal but if the vet ever stops this stuff, I will get some of the other. Thanks for the input on that. His poop is slowing down today (finally) - last night was a terribly long night. Up with him outside in the cold weather every two hours so he could go. I will probably keep him on science diet for a week and the slowly put him on either Innova or Wellness (whichever he likes better). He is such a picky eater now that I am happy he is eating the Science Diet without me hovering as much as I had to on the Eukanuba. Thanks for all of the feedback - and I will post again soon :) |
I am so glad he is feeling better. I get so worried when my babies are the slightest bit off. They seem so strong and fearless when they are well; and so tiny and helpless when they are not. I have stayed up many a night with my little guys and gals. Hope you both get more sleep tonight. Sometimes it seems like the weekends are the worst! |
