Um, I wish I could help, but he may have been abused by a man, hence his aggression towards him. I'm just curious as to why you took him knowing this information? The only I can say is if you really want to keep him your man has to be patient with him, NOT yell at him for any reason, show him extra love and affection and praise him with treats. If he can't do that your Yorkie will never open up to him. Yorkies need to gain trust. Good luck! |
I suggest you get in touch with an all-positive trainer in your area. A trainer can help you learn how to handle your dog, and over time and with the correct training, you can overcome these issues. Don't look for quick fix answers on the internet when it comes to aggressions. You need the one-on-one help of a qualified trainer or animal behaviotist. Good luck- hope you do the right thing so this Yorkie doesn't have to be re-homed again. |
Hi thank u for the advice , the lady I got him from had said he was a bit nippy with men but he had been fine untill yesterday and were taken aback by how aggressive he was :( we didn't react to it we just ignored him and let him come to us when he was ready .... The lady we got him from had only had him a year and was using him as a stud for her 3 dogs when I went to see him my heart sank he was a wee soul so loving so I got as much info as possible from her but she didn't seem to know mu more other than he was nippy with men and that he was fantastic with kids which he is , I have contacted her again to see if she has any more info and she said she used to put a muzzle on him when her partner was home in the evening but I really don't want to do that cos he is fine with my man its was just that once when he told him no :( I was surprised when he done the same with me today as he's been like my shaddow since we got him . I am willing to put as much time in as needed as he's part of the family now just looking for advice on what's the best approach thanks |
Wow she put a muzzle on him instead of fixing the problem, that is sad! It sounds like you really need to get a trainer- |
Thanks I will contact my vet tomorrow and see if he can recommend a trainer I think it will benefit both of us as I'm used to having large dogs :( when I took him to the vet he commented on how well behaved he was during the examination and he was a male :o I have a feeling its more to do with being told off I think he's possibly been hit while been told off before :( he is now part of our family and ill do whatever it take to improve his quality of life because he's obviously scared wee soul that he is :) thanks again for all the advice hopefully I find a trainer local and wee sam can get over his fears :) |
Keep it up. Do lots of research. Like someone above said they have to earn trust and using POSITIVE TRAINING methods is the best way. You can't really fight aggression with aggression so scolding will just provoke him more. Sound like he might need professional help, but you will be with him most of the time so the more you know and the more you do for him the better. There are some good books too, I think one is Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies but there are others people could probably suggest that would help. Maybe some books on clicker training and positive training. I've also seen good videos on youtube by username kikopup He probably needs a lot of gradual exposure to men with lots of praise and positive training like you said it will take time |
My first thought was finding a good trainer in your area as well. Good luck! And Welcome to YT! |
A muzzle! That explains it. He's afraid if you scold him the next step is a muzzle. In time with enough love he should come to trust that when he is told no, a muzzle will not follow. Poor thing. Thank God you rescued him! |
Dogs are very forgiving creatures. They do not hold grudges like humans- I think if you start with a good trainer- or read up on some books you will gain his trust again. It will take some time, but I know it can be done-That poor thing- I am glad you saved him- sounds like he was in a horrible home!! Training is always good for human and dog!! Just a little story on training! My Peanut is scared of extension cords ( ya i know- I have no idea where it came from) I am working with him to get above this fear- It only took 4 sessions and he is already 80% over the fear- I know it will take more time, but it is amazing how fast you can rehabilitate them- I am a big fan of Ceaser Millan too- " exercise, discipline and affection" That is the way to go! |
Thanks again for all the advice I will defo be looking for a trainer hopefully my vet will be able to recommend sum1 local , he is a fantastic natured wee dog as I also have 2 staffies and birds of prey and he's never gave any of them a second glance he even let me clip ,wash and blow dry him all the time wagging his tail , don't worry he has a forever home with me no matter how much work we have to put in :) ma partner has been gettin up a hour early before work so he can take him a wee walk one on one so he gets used to him (as previous owner said he was nippy with men) but I think it must be a case of fear of getting a telling off as that was the first time we had to tell him off but I'm sure in time he will come to trust us :) thanks again ill keep uz posted on progress I'm sure it will all be positive ...... Thanks julie +sam :) |

Nice! You did it! You have more than I do! Lol Aw he is so cute! I love when they lie like that all vulnerable and they want you to rub their belly! It will take him a little while, but he should come around! We have a member here who rescued a Yorkie who was hit by a car and the rescue said she was afraid of men! Well, it took a little while and she is daddy's best friend now! |
I know he's a wee cutie isn't he :) lol .... As I say apart from him snapping when u tyell him off he's a great natured wee thing he follows me everywhere and when we go to pick kids up from school he dances around on his back legs with pure excitement to see them :) ill keep u posted of progress but I must attempt sleep as its 1.15 am and I'm up at 5 to feed the birds and walk my staffies before every1 gets up , ni'night :) |

Well went to see the vet yesterday and he recommended I get him the snip but I feel as that will be a bit much for the wee dog to deal with at the moment so goin to wait till july-aug and if he's still the same then ill consider it :( aslo found a lovely dog trainer who and showed me sum techniques including clicker training which he is responding very well to apart from a few slip ups but as long as I'm there at the time I'm able to calm him down so hopefully if we keep at it he will eventually stop snapping at my partner lol :) |
I broke my mixed dog of men aggression by having a friend lay or sit on the floor when he was over. I also had him constantly blink when looking at him in the eye (Sign dogs give each other to show they aren't trying to be dominant). He gave him treats and tossed the toy around here and there and he would sometimes lay flat on the floor too. Now, my mix doesn't have so much problems with men. I had my mix since he was a baby so nothing traumatic happened, he just doesn't seem men a lot. |

I bought a breeder that was 3 years old. She absolutely hates men....she is loving and adorable and kind and soo sweet, but when a man walks into the room, she gets absolutely vicious, snarling and snapping at him....this is ANY man.....she was clearly abused before I got her, obviously by a man.....she has been with me 4 years now, and she has the same terrible reaction to my son everytime she sees him...you would think she had never seen him before. My son is so understanding and kind and understands she is like this for reasons we have no control over...she is retired now, and I will keep her the rest of her life. I would die if I rehomed her, and someone , somehow, decided they wanted a man in their life, and they kicked this darling to the curb....she doesnt deserve that at all. She is just my girl, and she stays close to me, and will just live her life out with me....but I wish I could get my hands on the man that did her this injustice. |
My one little girl pup has man fear. I keep Cheerios by the doors so they can throw a treat to her when they enter any room she is in. After a couple of days, she would take the treat from their hands. She still reverts mostly when she is awakened or they walk too fast past me. But for the most part, she tolerates them very well now. Obviously, 'no' is a trigger for him. Don't use it around him, pick a word he is not reactive to. After he settles in and learns to trust you, you will be able to work at desensitizing to the 'no'. My other girl was very reactive, thinking I would hit her whenever I moved too fast, like reaching out to grab a toy to play with her, and she bit me quite a few times. She now is showing bite inhibition (where she will put her mouth on me but does not bite hard) and I'm desensitizing her to being hit by play-spanking her, lol, I very lightly smack her butt...more like petting her... she's becoming way less defensive with it. It really takes a lot of time and patience. Working with a trainer is a great idea... |
