Dexter won't come, just backs away Dex will not come to us unless we have food or a treat. He just backs away. Once you pick him up, he is relaxed and will sleep in my arms. We have never yelled or hurt him in any way. It's like he does not want to be held. BTW he does this with all 3 of us in the house. He is 7 months old. Neutered 2 weeks ago. This has been ongoing, but seems worse not better. What can we do? |
When you say ongoing, do you mean ever since you got him or only since being neutered? |
It's funny b/c now that I realize it, my Aunt's Biewer sounds almost like your Dexter. His name is Tristan and he was never hit/beaten/etc. either. But every time anyone goes to pick him up he bows down and backs up. I think it's a submission thing. Tristan LOVES to be held and be on your lap, but he always backs up too. |
My Sami is the same way. I know she wants up, she barks at me if I don't pick her up, but when I reach down to get her, she backs up. She'll finally be still enough for me to get her after a couple tries. |
I dont know why they do it but Joel does the same thing with everyone in the house, and my brothers jack russel also did it so I think its normal. Kind of like my guinea pigs, when I try to pick them up they act like im trying to murder them lol, but once I get them they love being pet and held. Maybe it has to do with them being in the wild and there instinct to run from bigger things, lol i dunno. Also the few times Joel is still when I pick him up I say "pick up" so he knows what he needs to do to be picked up, he's been doing a little better from it. |
My Mylee does this too. With her, I think it is a trust issue, and she is anxious in other ways too. I do not accept this behavior because if she were to ever get out the door, I am afraid I wouldn't be able to catch her for her safety with her shying away from me like that. I've spent hours on end training her to come, sit, and stay while I reach down to either pet her, or pick her up. She absolutely does not get a treat unless she sits completely still while I approach her, pet, her or pick her up. |
Picture a big (no comparison intended)monster bending over you. Sissy would back away if you tried to pick her up. She got a lot better with us sitting on the floor and calling her to us and giving her a treat. Then we gradually increased our height-on knees, squatting, then bending, finally uprite. Now she will come to us and sit in front of us to be picked up or get her coat on to go out but it took a lot of patience. |
Thanks for the tips. I am working on the cheerio treat to come and sit. Once in my arms it's all love and kisses, then he takes a nap. Different that any other dog we have had. |
My Sapphire started doing that, but I think my DH picked her up and held her too tightly one time, I know he never meant to hurt her in any way, plus she does get overly excited, so it's a combination type thing, mostly when putting her up on the bed. We're both just really being conscious of how we handle her and she is doing better. It just takes time and awareness... |
