Brushing and combing.... I have a new little Yorkie pup - 4 to 5 lbs - about 10 weeks old. He goes absolute crazy if I try to comb or brush him. And - it is not that I'm hurting him - because more often than not - I haven't even touched him yet. He's a big boob! I can't help but think, "My God, I'd hate to be the groomer that gets you!" I've had lots of dogs. And, I know some dogs hate being combed or brushed and some love it. This little guy has sparse, thin, straight hair. It isn't tangled and it should be relatively easy to brush or comb. And, it's short. I guess I'll just brush him a little every day (and be gentle) whether he likes it or not. I know this sounds easy - and he should probably get used to it... but you really should to see him turning cartwheels and sommersaults and whinning and barking and going nutzoid! It's almost funny because he is really a calm little guy. Well - I'll try again tomorrow. Wish us luck! Carol Jean |
Poor pupster! Good luck! Were you venting or asking for suggestions? |
I was mostly venting. I can't think of much else to do -- other than try and brush him (gently) a little bit every day - and hope he gets used to it. But - if anyone has any advise, I'm willing to try it. Again - I am thankful that he has the hair he does - or we'd really have a problem. Thanks for your reply - Carol Jean |
Well, what you could try is desensitizing him to the process, but it will take some time. First, just let him approach the comb or brush on his own. When he does, praise and treat. Make it fun! Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat until he seems completely comfortable and happy with the idea. Advance to him approaching you with the brush in your hand (praise, treat, repeat) to that plus he's in the location where you normally groom him(praise, treat, repeat). Only when he's comfortable with that can you start doing 'one stroke - treat, 2 strokes - treat' and slowly building up till you treat only at the end. You may be able to teach him to ENJOY grooming this way! Alternately, I've read that smearing a dab of peanut butter on the wall (or wherever) for them to lick off distracts them nicely. |
I love the peanut butter idea, thats a good one First Yorkie, I'm gonna have to give that a try with my my little guy. :D |
