I just called my vet- I asked who the vet was that did the surgery she said Dr Sandu ( my vet) calls his orthopedic surgeon to come in and do the surgery. So Pnut would be getting it done by an orthopedic surgeon- i should have asked when I was there, but I was so upset I didnt. Pnuts left leg is at a 1- my question is should I get the surgery on both? Right now he doesnt ever limp or skip on his left leg, but I know his right leg is so bad he probably uses his left more- im worried when his right leg is fixed will he start limping on his left? I know i should ask my vet and i will but i wanted to see if anyone had expierence!! |
Sorry to hear about your baby. My Pixie had surgery almost 2 years ago when she was 4. She had no signs of LP an vet never mentioned it. One day Nikki scared her and she fell of the bed. She has always used ramps or stairs. The next day she couldn't stand up and it looked like her leg was hanging funny. I took her to the ER. The Er vet said it was LP. I wasn't sure since Pixie had never had any indication of it. I didn't have confidence in the er vet so I took her back later that night when a different vet was on duty he took an Xray and said LP surgery was needed. I took her to her regular vet the next day and she agreed. In the mean time I kept her confined and on pain meds. I made an appointment with the board certified surgeon at the ER Hospital and she said surgery as well. She had the surgery that day. I think if I had given her leg more time to rest i may not have had the surgery done, but I'm not sure. Pixie did fine during the surgery and recovery wasn't as bad as I thought. Pixie is not a very active dog and after the first 5-6 days I was able to put Roxie in with her and they slept a lot. I used various ways of confinement to prevent boredom. I would put her on my bed with a small animal expen around her. I moved the little expen to which ever room I was in so she could be part of what was going on. I bought a larger play yard and set that up in my bedroom next to my bed. She slept there with Cali and Roxie. I put her little crate in there and they liked being in there. The first few days she slept most of the time and I carried her a lot. By the 4th week she was able to walk more so I only confined her when I couldn't be there. Knock on wood she has been fine since. She had Grade 3. My Cali who is almost 7 has grade 4 in both and has never had a problem until recently. The other day she started limping on her back left leg. I gave her medcam for a couple of days and kept her semi confined. She is doing better now. I am hoping to avoid surgery but not sure if that will happen. She has been grade 4 for 5 years and this is the first time she has had any problems. Good luck! |
