Max is shaking and acting strange,help!
 
I'm not sure where to post this,move it if it's in the wrong spot,thank you.i don't know what's going on with Max,(he just turned 2, 1-28)lately,he's been shaking with his tail between his legs and his ears down!also,he's been trying to go behind the couch(which he never does)when I try to cheer him up,he's fine,he starts playing and everything is fine,but,eventually after we're done playing,he starts to act weird again!he eats and drinks fine,everything else is normal.I have been holding off taking him to the vet,since I am currently unemployed,and he seems fine when we play,could he just be turning into a nervous dog?he doesn't ever go anywhere,so someone abusing him is out of the question,and I have had him since he was a puppy,this just started happening these past couple of days or so.Sorry for the long post,I'm just really confused and don't know what to do.

Is he scared of something? Is there a loud noise or something? I deal with a scared dog as well- when he is like that try taking him outside or playing with him to snap him out of it.

I would take him to the vet or your groomer & have his Anal Glands checked out for starters.

Oh no, poor Max. Shaking and tail tucking are definite signs that something is wrong, and that he is in discomfort/pain. Could be so many things, something simple like anal glands, or more serious. When my Max started behaving differently, it was because he had a corneal ulcer.

Is he pooping okay and on a normal schedule? Scooting on the floor? Is he sensitive to touch anywhere on his body? Walking okay? Anything unusual with his eyes -- squinting, blinking too much, tearing, or sensitivity to bright light?

I hope you find the answer quickly. If it continues, a vet visit is the only way to go. Can you look into Care Credit to spread out the payments if necessary?

This happened to Joey as well, eventually he wouldn't eat, and that's when we knew something was wrong, but corneal ulcers are very painful and not always very obvious, they can lead to blindness if not treated. We had to take Joey to the emergency room, so I advise you to get your dog to the vet today, it will be much cheaper. It's so easy to treat with the right medication, but this isn't something you can buy over the counter. They get a corneal ulceration, just by doing something simple, like rubbing their face on the carpet. Dogs are genetically programed to hide pain. Showing any type of pain makes them vulnerable to attack from predators, so it’s up to you to pick up on these changes of behavior. Remember, it’s much cheaper to treat something if caught early. I’m sorry, your financial situation is bad, but if you can’t give him the proper care or borrow from family, it’s time to think about rehoming him.

He's still eating, so he's pooping, but three other things aren't normal. He's shaking, his tail is down, and he's hiding, all are signs of distress.

I agree with the others, shaking, tail between his legs, ears down and trying to hide behind the couch are never good signs. I know it may not be in your budget at this time as you are unemployed, but I would get him to your vet ASAP. Good luck and I hope Max is feeling better soon.

Those things are good, but something is definitely going on and it does not sound like it is just a behavioral thing. It really sounds like there is a health issue.

I'm obsessed with eyes, admittedly....gently pull up his eyelid and check for redness or bloodshot whites. As Nancy wrote, eye problems are not always visible to the naked eye, but often the white of the eye will give a clue.

One of the other hundreds of possibilities is seizures...how long do these episodes of shaking and tail-tucking last? Does Max appear alert when he is doing this? Can you easily get his attention? Or does he seem distant and not focused on you?

I agree with Nancy that health issues are often less expensive when addressed immediately.

I was going to mention seizures because this is almost how Sadie was acting. I would get him to the vet asap
