From what I gather, it means they've got the smooth, silky hair, as opposed to the fluffy, cotton coat. |
I have two babies and they both have different coats. Ally is silky and Tia is cotton. Ally tangles, but is much more manageable. She is a DIVA, however, and hates to be groomed. Tia has the cotton coat and OMG, she creates knots at the blink of an eye. I had to trim her in a shorter cut so she could wear sweaters. I used to cut huge matts out of her hair daily! Ally's hair is thinner and silky and Tia's is thick and wavy. |
Haha! When I had Tink at the vet's, another client said I had a 'Silkie Yorkie"! I asked What is that? She told me a Silky Yorkie is like Tink, usually bigger, very light coloring, and having a silky coat. And she said they're very expensive! I tried to tell her there is no such thing, only a yorkie with a silky coat, and that they do not charge any more for them. She wouldn't believe me! Lol! In summary... I think it's just another term thought up by unscrupulous greeders to get more money for 'out of standard' Yorkies. Just like 'Teddy bear faced, heart-shaped heads, tea-cup... etc. etc. etc... |
This is funny, we have a lady that comes to our vet clinic, who breeds a silky terrier with a yorkie, and claims they are silky yorkies and trys to convince people they are purebred registered puppies!!!! She even tried sellling them for 1200.00 |
Roxy is a yorkie with a silky coat. It is a thin coat, grows very very slowly, wavy. Most or all silky coated yorkies show green eyes in flash photos. Many of the cottony coated yorkies have thick, fast growing hair and don't feel as silky to the touch. One good thing about the silky coat... I save a lot of money at the groomer. ;-) I've actually been scissor trimming her myself. |
could you mean a silky terrier? When I first started researching yorkies before I got Remy I would confuse a Silky with a yorkie. |
I have had several people 'correct' me about what my kids are...saying they are "Silky" or "Silky Yorkie" but my kids are just 'plain' Yorkies with silky coats...one is golden, having lost all her black. There is a Silky Terrier which is a breed created in Australia, as I understand it, using a Yorkie to create the breed...bred to an Australian Terrier, I believe...if you can trust my memory! At this time of day, I am not sure that's wise! :p There are differences between Silkies and Yorkies, although both (can and) are supposed to have silky hair per the 'standard' for the breed. Silkies are not as common in the USA as Yorkies, as I understand it, but there are Silkies here. Lots of people are simply unaware and merely repeat words without knowledge or understanding to back them up, unfortunately...they trust their sources to never be incorrect and therefore can be un-convince-able. :confused: Makes for a good laugh, IMHO...no insult intended...it's kinda like having someone you don't know correct you about what your name is!! :confused::rolleyes::p:D |

The Silky Terrier or Australian Terrier as is known in Europe is a breed that was develped at the end of the 1800's in Australia, they are a cross between the Yorkshire Terrier and the Australian Terrier. their hair is very lustrous and silky, just like human hair.. I know I breed them.. hugs, |
