Dog still eats his own poop ughhhhh Ughhhhh My puppy continues to eat his own poop. I don't know what to do becaus his poop smells horrendous and he is starting to smell. I bathe him regularly but sometimes he will eat his poo right after a bath. It gets all over the fur around his face it's nasty He will try to eat his poop right after taking a potty outside in the grass or when I have to leave him for a couple hours (I know this because there will be no signs of poop but his face will smell and sometimes he will have chunks in his facial hair ) If anyone has advice or had issues but their dog grew out of it please let me know! Oscar was doing that as well so i put a little chunk of pineapple in one of his meals each day for awhile and he stopped. Hopefully he will grow out of it.. |

in most puppies eating their poop is a learned behavior, mama dog eats their poop when they are babies to keep the area clean, is in their genes to protect the young. buy a can of unsweeten pineaple and give him lil peices as treats I do this with my puppies at 11 weeks to make sure they don't eat poop by the time they go home, is safe and works well.. hugs, |

I'm starting him on pineapple. He had his first today as a treat and he loves it! Crossing fingers that it works |
I have also heard pineapple. Some dogs or maybe most, have the ability to smell out undigested protein in feces, both their own or other dogs. They have the urge to eat it because they themselves may be protein or B1 deficient. The pineapple works for them as it does for us, it allows the body to absorb more protein, hence leaving less in his feces, he can't smell it, doesn't need it, and hopefully won't eat it. Other than that I believe there is a product you can add to their food to make their waste unappealing. Solid Gold S.E.P. (Stop Eating Poop) Dog Supplement I also had a friend use meat tenderizer, the dog stopped eating his own, but still ate other dogs' waste they encountered on walks. We had that problem before with one of the girls but it passed. Read up on it, tried everything I could possibly think of that might deter her from it. I seriously thought about using a muzzle but couldn't go through with it. She grew out of the habit, thankfully. Hopefully yours will too. |

Hi i tried the pineapple and it worked sometimes but it gave him and my shih tzu(i have to give it to her as well cause hers is the poo he likes) tummy trouble. I am now giving each solid gold s.e.p (stop eating poop) & solid gold d-zyme. I will see how this works.. |
Okay I am not going to read this thread. I've done my time with this subject as a former owner of Black Labs, a pitbull thrown on the thruway, a St. Bernard, a couple pointers....I can say for sure it is not breed specific, nor are the cures. It is, however time consuming and vigilance is key. You may not find the cure right away, but try everything listed, each dog will have his own remedy...trust me. In the meantime a clean bucket of water with antiseptic soap and a washcloth a tinge of listerine will do the trick...In the end it will be worth it, I promise. I remember a time when I didn't think I could go on anymore with this daily...there are no words...but read the thread and do what it takes, there is light at the end of the tunnel...Good Luck and please don't give up! |
