No, Not The Bully Stix!
 
After reading such great things on this forum about Bully Stix, I went out and got some for Bubba. I bought him the Merrick brand and let him have one on two separate occasions.

First... Wow they stink:eek: I mean, oh my it smells like, well exactly like what it is! No big deal, if he likes (actually loved) them and they will aid in his teething I'm all for it.

Okay, now the dilemma, I took a couple of days off to make sure they agree with him, his #2 business seemed a tiny bit slimier but otherwise fine. Then earlier I noticed little scabs on the insides of both his ears, like dried little pimples. Our vet is closed until Monday, I have been putting Animax ointment on them and wonder if it is an allergic reaction to the Bully Stix.

I haven't noticed any more scratching than usual, he'll scratch at his harness or jacket, top knot when I snuck one on a week ago. It is tender to the touch, he pulls away and attempts a soft bite.

Has anyone else ever encountered little pimple-like bumps on their baby's ears?

Mine got it, and we actually have had quite a few other yorkies come in our clinic with them too. With mine, it was in the summer and the vet said she thought it was from bug bites, but i have noticed this very often with yorkies i groom also.

As far as the stinky bully sticks I get Callie's from bestbullysticks.com and get the odor free ones and never had any that stink. I don't know what the little pimples could be but hopefully someone else will know or your vet will.

Were you given any instructions or medication? I thought of giving him a bit of children's Benadryl, but I think I will wait to see what the vet says.

Yup. Bully sticks are quite notorious for its bad smell.

I would google Merricks FDA before giving him any more of their bully sticks.

I wasnt, they never bothered him, and they went away all by themselves. My friends yorkie had them and they went away by themselves too. I kinda wondered if it could be from shaving, but i still shave and he doesnt have them anymore.

Bully sticks do stink, but Jack loves his! Not sure how he can tolerate the smell....:confused:

As for the pimples - not sure what those are but I hope your vet can figure those out...

Can't help you with the ear problem...

HOWEVER, I can recommend bully sticks! I get the premium ones from westbrookdog.com and don't notice much smell at all. Also, great service there!

OMG, if Prissy didn't have her bully sticks I would never have a break. I swear they are awesome and help with the need to chew..Not noticing any ill effects on the ears bur just so thankful for the bully sticks and himalayan chews.

I know not everyone agrees about letting the pups have these, but do want to say my girls love them. We have not had any problems with the twizzlers and allergies, etc.

Some of the Merrick's bullysticks can stink to high heaven. If they have been wrapped in plastic, I sometimes unwrap them and put them away for awhile, so they can get less stinky. We had a batch once and my husband banned them from the living room -they were so bad. Ha. Of course, the stinkier the better for my girls.

Glad you are going to go to the vet about your pup's ears. It could be related or not. My Piccolo had bumps in her ears and it was the beginning of a vaccine reaction. Not saying that is what it is, just wanted to mention it.

Went to the vet this morning, I told him that Bubba did seem to want to scratch at his ears more yesterday. He took a scraping/sample to check for parasites etc. He said we should treat it like an allergy according to what I said about the bully stick (this is always funny, "if the only thing different is as you say" as though I would omit details of a Friday night bender in which Bubba and I drank cherry Cokes and ate an assortment of Little Debbie's snack cakes with chile flavored pork rinds :eek: ). Bless his heart he's just doing his job :p

So, Benadryl twice a day and I can keep applying the Animax for healing along with hydrocortisone as needed for itching. Once the bumps clear up, stop the Benadryl and by then they should have the results from the scrape and then we can go from there. He recommended trying another brand Bully Stix or waiting until Bubba's a little older.

I hope I can find a bully stick that agrees with him, he realllly like them :D

I'm waiting on a free sample from bestbullystix.com. You can request one. They told me they don't send out samples of odor free though.

All these issues with things made in China scare me now. I think I'll throw out all Charlie's treats except Zuke's Mini Naturals. They are made in USA and USDA chicken. Free of wheat, soy, corn, by products, artificial colors and flavor. A lot of nutrition and few calories. And use veggies and cheese, etc. Need to look closer at his Science Diet kibble now! Sorry I got off topic.

We also are very cautious of products made in China. You just never know what they consider acceptable to put in their consumables :(

By the way, I'm curious as to how much Charlie weighs? They didn't weigh Bubba this morning and silly me I forgot to ask. But he will be back on Feb 12, and hopefully 3 lbs :) His last visit, Jan 12, he was 2lb 12 oz, he had only gained 4 oz in two weeks, they are going to think I don't feed my poor baby:eek: But I promise I do, I kid and tell my dh that he has the metabolism of a crackhead:p

I'll let you know tomorrow after shots. He was 2 lbs 13 oz the end of December. He feels heavier. Looks bigger, but some is wavy/puff hair! :)
