Help with crating my lil man! Hey everyone! I have a 9 week old puppy and I've been crating him at night and while we go out. And he hates it. He cries and cries. First of all, I know he is supposed to go in on his own, but he won't. It doesn't matter what toy or treat you try and bribe him with. So I put him in all the while telling him how good he is. I can't leave him out- I have three cats that aren't used to him yet and the crate is the safest place for him. So for his own protection, he has to go in. I've tried having the crate in the room with us which only makes it worse. And i ignore him when he cries and only take him out during the rare quiet moments- so not to encouage his cries. Any suggestions? I feel so bad for him. |
There are many threads on crate training, some should be helpful. In early training I do not close the door on the crate. I use wire crates. I sit on the floor with the crate in front of me. I call the pup and show them a treat through the back wire. You must make the crate be a happy , safe place that they love. It usually take about 2 weeks to train them to love their crate. Mine are fed in their crate and that is where they get a Kong filled with treats. They also have special toys for the crate. At first don't close the door, then close it for a few seconds, build up the time the door is closed. Right now your pup sees the crate as a jail not his safe comfy den. Hope this helps. |
Your doing fine, Its just gong to take time for him to get use to it. Also be sure that he has had a chance to empty his bowls before putting him in his cage or that will only cause issues with potty training. Try to put a light weight cover over the cage. One that blocks his view of everything going on. That usually will help to calm them down. You may also want to try to get him excited about going into his cage with some hype making the cage sound like the place to be. Make sure he has a stuffed animal that is simular to his size. * Preferable one that you got from the breeder with mothers scent on it. If not get an article of your clothing one you dont need and wear it for a few days or nights to bed and put that in the cage with him. It will give him a cense of security. |
Are you using a wire pen or a plastic enclosed crate? As Teresa said the wire pen works much better because they don't feel so shut off from everything and you can always cover it if you want to. Exercise pens seem to be a good option, too. Puppies need a place to be able to pee when you are not there. It is true you can eventually train them not to go in the crate but young puppies cannot hold it very long. They have tiny organs. Do you have a bathroom or utility room you could gate him in? |
What size are you using? My dogs have an XL crate with a pillow pet and bed one side with toys in the bed, and on the other side a pee pad. I would suggest baby gates but since you have cats that won't really help. He is really young so he might be scared because to him you are his mommy and he wants to be with you all the time. |
I use a small wire crate for transporting but I like a larger crate for keeping them in. A puppy has a small bladder as stated. They need room to move around. Kirby keeps a toy and her food in the crate. It's her personal bedroom away from us. |
