How do you know? What type of coat a Yorkie has? Charlie is 16 months old - will his coat change at his age?? |
My yorkie has a silky soft coat that is rather thin. She's 3 months old. After a year it's likely their coats won't change but I could be wrong. |
But how do you know if it's silky or cottony?? |

I didn't see your descripton of what Charlie's current coat color is, but it can take 3 or possibly more years for the coat to 'mature' with regard to coloring...which I assume you mean. There is a "Sticky" on YT about Yorkie coat color genetics and there are other sources as well, if you are interested in doing a little research. I find it a fascinating subject. :) If you mean coat type (silky vs cottony), my understanding is that coat type is genetically linked to 'eye glow' color and that a pup's eyes with a 'correct' silky coat glow blue to green to gold where an 'incorrect' (cotton) coat type Yorkie has eyes that glow red. Also, a cotton coat has no shine and does not reflect light/is not shiny where a silky coat reflects light and shines/glows like polished metal. I am a genetics enthusiast...not an expert. I'm just interested in the subject. :D Coat type will not change from cottony to silky or vice versa, as I understand it, but at 16 months old, if Charlie is genetically capable of doing so, his coat color may continue to change color for quite some time. Brody will be 2 in March and his color is still changing. Mia is golden, and I am still watching to see what happens with her coloring. I do not believe anyone can give you a definitive answer as to exactly what color a Yorkie's changing coat color will end up being...but, that's part of the fascination with Yorkies! Good luck. I hope you find your answer! |
Thank you so much! That was very helpful! |
