Question about pup getting used to wearing clothes Hi, I mentioned in an earlier post that my pup has some aggression at times, but it's mostly when we're doing something that she's not fond of (or used to). She does well with baths and getting brushed. But, when I put a sweater on her, she goes bananas! She's okay when I slip the sweater over her head, but when I start to put her legs through the holes, she starts growling and showing her teeth. What can I do to get her used to putting it on? She does the same when we try to put a knot or a bow in her hair, but not as bad as when putting clothes on. I've tried to give her treats when putting it on, but it didn't help that much. What's the best way for me to teach her that putting on clothes is a good thing? Thanks. |
Hmmm...well I am not sure about the agression part. I am sure an older YT pro can help more in that area than I. But for us the key to Katie Scarlett was persistance. She kinda nipped at the very first thing I ever put on her, but I just kept at it. Soon she loved our morning ritual, and still does. She almost leaps into her sweaters now. She will stick her head through and put her arms in on her own. So just keeping up with it helped us. I just kept doing that and the top knot everyday and now she loves it. I did find with us that the top knot has to be a band most days. She does not like the little clips I tried first. But I think after a while, they come to enjoy the top knot. I think KS knows it keeps her hair out of her eyes. Good luck! |
Members have told me persistance! If I put it on over his harness before I take him out he doesn't pay attention to it because he is so distracted by the outdoors or running/playing. After we are inside awhile he goes back into a pouting mode where he will hardly move or hide out of reach. So I have been taking it off after awhile for now because I just can't have him getting under things and unable to lure him out for HOURS. My puppy isn't aggressive about it, just acts sad. One other benefit of putting the sweater over his harness is the added protection and reassurance that he can't slip out of the harness. |
