What "treats" to use for training? I need suggestions for treats when training my 13 week old puppy. We have been using a higher grade dry dog food as a treat and he still likes these because it's not his puppy chow. With these treats I have already housebroken him where he rings door bells to be let out, the commands sit, stay (inside only thus far), and fetch when outside. I am now teaching him to come while outside but I need a super yummy treat different than other treats to use only for this command; it needs to be so yummy he will never say no to it, that will not spoil, and I can carry in my pocket easily. But MUST be healthy! What do you use? |
Wow, your 13 week old does all of that, I need to know the secret,,I have taught Prissy to come and sit. I have just given her kibble that she eats all the time,,I do believe in a good dog food and she is doing great on Blue Buffalo Puppy. I am still in awe of your puppy. |
If you can continue using kibble, do it! Just use it a meal replacement so you are not over-feeding, but that's as with any treat. :) Jackson really likes the soft Buddy Biscuits and I can break them up into many pieces. Very high-value is usually plain chicken breast or low fat string cheese on occasion. |
We use turkey hot dog weenies as per instruction of our training teacher. I buy the Oscar Meyer brand. I take the weenie and heat it for 20 seconds. I then cut it into 1/4 inch coins. I then take each coin and cut it into about 8 tiny pieces. You can get a lot of treats out of one weenie. Most of the other dogs in our class either halve the coin or leave it whole, but since KS is so small, I cut her's up teeny tiny. She adores them! I can say the word 'weenie' and no matter where she is or what she is doing, she comes running!!! They are her favorite! We only give a little bit each day, don't want to overfeed. I would say one weenie chopped up lasts us at least 4 days. So in the end, if you think about it a package of 8 weenies will last you a really long time. |
We liked Zuke's Mini Naturals for training treats! They are very small and soft. They seemed to like the chicken flavor best. |
For our special treat, we use dehydrated beef liver. I break up the treats so they are small, and they are healthy too. |

Dori is bell-trained also. Except for the times she goes bell "crazy", it has worked great for us. Anything liver-flavored makes a great training treat. We use Cloud Star Tricky Trainers; made in USA, wheat and corn free; low fat. They are soft and can be given whole or broken in half. Sounds like you are off to a good start! |
Of course your baby is smart. He's a yorkie. ;) :D mine is even bilingual. I also use kibble. We take his dinner sometimes and use that for trick/command training or reinforcement. For super special treats, chicken breast (unseasoned and boiled). Or we use carrot sticks, lettuce, or tomato. Kaji loves his veggies. :) |
We use honey nut cherrios! My dogs love them and my vet reccomended them for us. |
Dried liver treats .. |
I like freeze dried chicken and livers. Easy to break up depending on which dog I'm working with. |
I rotate treats for Lilo. When she's home she gets freeze dried chicken. And when were on walks she gets kibble. When we're training she gets k9 naturals freeze dried raw which she goes crazy for ( it is also her food, she never has set meals but earns her food in the process). :) its different treats for different reasons so she never gets bored. |
