Ahhh! Well when we eat our girls go in their "houses" they stare at the floor and wait for something to fall. If it does I give a little eh eh stay and they listen and go back to their "houses". So no I don't intentionally let them eat off the floor. With that said, I went through the wholed grape toxicity drama with Miss Mini a few years ago..and I no longer purchase the items on the "toxic to yorkies list"!!! So if they do find something I have little to worry about! I do miss grapes, and macadamia nuts, and raisins....!!!! (Still have a stash of chocolate in my car though!!!!) |

concretegurl- I think it is awesome you trained your pups to not eat anything off the floor!! Man, can I ship Pnut to your house for some boot camp? :D Peanut will pretty much vaccum the floor. I don't like him to do that, and when he is I make him stop. DH started it- We eat on our coffee table, well when we are done DH will put Pnut on the table and Pnut will lick the crumbs, Well DH has done this so many times Pnut waits until we are done and if we don't put him up there he will sit there and bark and cry and jump until one of us does. I think he gets more than what he thinks, he never gets more than a dime size of crumbs if that even. sigh- I don't know anymore, I try to train him but DH will come behind me and mess it all up- whats the point :D |

lynzy420, I'm so sorry you went through that! How horrible. I'm note sure I opt out of some food stuff especially with kids here, but bless you for your sacrifices! celstu1 OMYorkies giving up chocolate is major! Chocolate is the only 'candy' I let my kids really eat! But they know it's super dangerous for the dogs and it's their big treat so they are super defensive with it. Accidents happen fingers crossed knock on wood here. lovespandp A few people asked about this-sure! ...As soon as Brister takes Scoobers to work on training for agility & focus, dexterandalana takes Princess to make her sit & wait coming in and out doors, and Alaskan Dude takes Elvis to train him to be as comfortable with dirt, snow and outdoors as Jille! Oh & everybody pitches in to get these wild beasts of mine ;) to listen while distracted on walks! :D |
OMg... Thank You !! Thank you.... Dogs and onions.... I had no idea! How ironic that just last night I was cutting up some onions to go on top of my coney dog and I dropped some on the floor. Ruby was the only one in the area that shouldn't have been. I' am so happy that I have taught them all to not eat off of the floor or I could have been in for a real shocker and possibly a very sick pup !!! WARNING! Onions Are Toxic to Dogs I too do not allow my dogs to eat off of the floor or to take food from anyone else. People food in a big NO NO in our home. except for the occational peanit or popcorn. I have taught the dogs that they are not allowed in the kitchen when food is being prepared or when we are at the dinner table eating our meal. Occasionally one of them gets by me (usually Ruby) that I have to shoo into the other room. We are still working on that....but all in all they do pretty great. On the other hand when it comes to me clearing the table after a meal... they watch every little morsel like a hawk. I have also taught them not to take food from a child. Had to do this due to my child care services that I provide in my home. They also will not take treats from other people (vet. , my mother). |
I'm very impressed by all of you who have your pups trained not to eat from the floor! I can't really think of a time where Levi has gotten into dropped food - it's only me or my brother here with the pups, and we're both neurotic about keeping the house dog-proof. The only real trouble we've had is my brother's bigger pup getting into the trash can. Levi's too small to do that kind of damage. Levi would, however, probably eat any kind of food that falls to the floor. He knows the command "out" for "drop it immediately," but if there were food involved, he'd probably take that to mean "swallow quickly." |
My dog will not eat unless we hand feed him:( Eat off the floor...eww forget it...He will not even take food or treats from other people likes hes afraid they might poison him LOL! He certainly has his own personality! |

Strangely he's also a food sneaker & was hardest to train for this. |

I can't even tell you how many horror stories I have heard and read that have surfaced *because* the dog wasn't trained not to take things off the floor or from strangers. You're doing the right thing in not letting your dogs eat things from the floor. Sprout was trained in this since he was little and never takes things from the floor...nor does he take treats from store clerks or vet techs. As another stated above, he only takes them if I take them first and offer them to him. The only exception to this is in our home. He takes whatever is given to him in his bowl. That's why we make darned sure that our guests and visitors know exactly what he can and cannot have. Bella is still a puppy, but she IS learning very well in regard to many things, including but not limited to...eating things off the floor. It takes a while (took us ages with Sprout) to train a puppy that this isn't acceptable behavior, but wow...you sure can save yourself a lot of heartache if you take the time to do it. No...you're not "neurotic", you're a responsible pet owner. :animal-pa PS - I shouldn't say "Never"....regarding Sprout. He does take his own treats off the floor if he doesn't catch them during the 'toss'. Sprout is getting older and doesn't quite have the 'get up and grab it' that he used to. However...he hates getting treats without the toss, and will pitch a fit if we do not toss it. So we toss it and quite frequently it DOES land on the floor...or bounces off his nose and onto the floor...in which case he grabs it and eats it. However, he knows it's okay to do that with his treats and nothing else. |

I should clarify-we use the word rebound here-if their treat falls from my hand or from their mouth-they get it & eat it. Especially with the schnauzers dancing or walking on hind legs treats sometimes hit the floor, but I think they know it's okay because it was literally just given to them from hand. |
I tested my boys last night. I 'dropped' a piece of white baked chicken meat on the floor and when they rushed over, I said "No, leave it, leave it." and they did. they looked and stared at me but did not touch it. So I picked it up and said Good Boys and then hand fed it to them as a treat for leaving it alone! :) I guess Im not a terrible doggy mommy after all! haha |
I love it you did a science project! :D Great that they listen to you- Elvis is a maniac for chicken after him snagging the chicken nugget in the box(!) trying to eat both, literally we were pulling it out taring the paper piece by piece around his teeth and out-and then there was the first time we tried to take a chicken bone away & he snapped it in half in one bite, eating the thigh joint whole-well I'm super careful with chicken around Elvis, now. He didn't snap or grow,l but it was scary, he just bit down on it and held on to it like an alligator! (maybe eel) Quote:
