The Humane Society has notices up at Davis for special funds they have 'discounts' due to it being a learning campus-or to say because they also have so many in house things goign on, however Davis like any other veterinary care facility is expensive, part of being a pet owner is assuming those costs.

Have you contacted her breeder ? to see if they will offer any help . If not you deff need to do so. Also the breeder needs to be notified about the Liver Shunt so they can stop breeding the parents or many others will be in the same boat that you are in. Did you contact UC Davis & ask if they will put you on a payment plan ?

I actually foster for YTNR and I believe this Liver Shunt fund is just for the rescues. I am sorry but there are alot of Yorkies in rescue that need the help also

I also wanted to add that the breeder from whom you got the puppy...they did not offer any health guarantee from genetic ailments? If not...ouch, I'm sorry. All too often there are breeders who choose to feed off the emotions of humanity, and use that to sell their puppies. It's very hard to resist their cuteness...regardless of the consequences.

I'll pray that you're somehow about to afford to get your puppy the surgery she so clearly needs.

I echo the sentiments of a lot of YT members here; if nothing can be done, please continue to contact Rescue groups to surrender her. Yes, it would be VERY hard letting her go, but at the same time, you must realize the benefit you are giving her; a chance at a normal life with optimum health.

It aches my heart to post this. But I hope that you have redone BATS to see if your low protein diet is working.

The symptom picture you are describing seems to my mind to be of one of fairly high toxicity. This means your girl may only have a very limited time here to find the help she so desperately needs.

Please talk to your vet to apprise yourself of the relative severity of her condition. Time can be of critical essence here.

I highly urge you to make a short time frame for getting Bridgett in for surgery. I'm suggesting dependent upon what your vet says 7-10 days.

This also means that you need to "now" start the conversation with a rescue, in case that your fundraising efforts bear no money or money enough to get the surgery done.

I know hindsight is almost always 100%, but for other people who may stum ble across this thread; please consider seriously the financial burden of a Yorkie. If you can't afford out of pocket 2-$3 grand for extraordinary expenses' get pet insurance in place the day you buy your pup.

I do not believe that comments such as yours are at all necessary under these circumstances. Put yourself in the OP's shoes, would you not do Anything & Everything possible including but not limited to begging to help your baby IF you could not afford to, I know that I would .:(

oh your poor baby, maybe you can do some things to get the money for your baby.are you able to do any kind of work to raise additional money for your baby...take out a loan.. Sell non necessity things around your house for money... i can't sew but its not too hard to hem things, perhaps buy some cheap fabric and make small dog bandanas and sell them as fundraising for your baby, or maybe you know someone who can help you sew them, have a dog meetup in your town.. where eveyone buys them to attend and support your baby, or sell them at the sunday fleamarket, or make some kind of dog thing to sell and have fundraising for your baby. Go around to local stores ask for donations for a gift basket, put together a gift basket, sell tickets at dog meetups or flea market and to friends.I'm sure you will find a way to help your baby.I feel your pain and am praying for your baby.But your baby is one of the lucky ones...she has an owner who can help her and unfortunatley there are alot of other dogs out there who don't have any owners who can't do some of the things i mentioned which your capable of.so they have priority over your baby at places that fund dog care for those in need...theres so many things you can do to fundraise for your baby... if it were me i'd do that, its going to be work but i'm sure you'll get enough somehow for her.

If you love Bridgette as you say you do then you she needs to be surrendered to a rescue so that she can get the care she needs. It's not reasonable to try to "sell things on ebay" or the other suggestions that were given. She needs help NOW not in a few weeks or months. She will die without this surgery. Send YTNR another email and ask if they will accept her as a surrender and then follow through to turn her over for the care she needs. Do this TODAY! Her life depends on it and you are her only hope. :(

I also wanted to say that I just hate "Lemon Laws." I know that they are completely necessary, don't get me wrong, but they all have a thing says the breeder has the right to exchange the dog or refund the money and take the dog back instead of paying it's medical bills, and you know they will just either kill the dog themselves or have it put down. It makes it sound like all dogs are interchangeable, as well. Like you're going to say "oh, I got a broken dog, give me a new one." It's not a coffee pot from Wal-Mart, ya know?

The idea of surrendering the dog to a rescue sounds interesting but I have seen representatives of rescues state that they were not able to take more dogs because they were short on funds and/or foster homes. It's just not always an option and with the number of cases of liver shunt in this country it is apparent way.

This person is living on disability so I doubt she would be able to get much more credit. After reading the posted link on puppy lemon laws it is apparent that the dog breeder's lobby is much more effective than those who lobby against these breeders in most states. We need a more effective way of reaching the public about the problem.

It's too bad that university veterinary hospitals couldn't take more of these cases at a discounted price. They are getting the experience for their students to treat the animals so they should offer their service for less. A human hospital would never turn away a sick child for treatment but apparently a veterinary hospital is very able to do so. It's very sad.

I'm so very sorry you and your baby are going thru a most difficult and heartbreaking time right now. If she is as sick as you say, then she may not even make it thru surgery. When I was fostering, I had a little male given to our Rescue that had liver shunt. The owner wanted him back "after" the rescue paid for his operation. I took him to the Vet. who said he wouldn't operate because the dog was too far gone and would not be able to survive an operation. The owner was so angry at us that she took him back, got a limited Vet. credit card and found a Vet. who took her money, operated on that dog and the dog didn't make it off the operating table.
You need to surrender that dog to a Rescue immediately for further evaluation to see if she can even survive an operation.
I will pray for her recovery.

my heart breaks for you and your little puppy. Have you taken her to a different vet for a second opinion? You do not live that far away from me , and I know of a vet that is in Hanford who is certified, before doing any procedures that could be costly they do a breakdown of expenses, This is a amazing vet hospital.
Anther suggestion that crossed my mind is that you are disabled, if you could claim her as a service dog or one in training that has a specfic need to assist you with your disabling conditions you might be able to get more help from the vet hospital, and work on a financial plan . I have no idea if you got this pup to train as a service dog, and don't want you to do this if it was not your intention .
I am also fully disabled so is my son, we have our 2 dogs as sevice animals which was planned way ahead of time, before getting one. I also have a savings account that could be used for emergency care if one of them were to become deathy ill. Before having the account I had to go to a couple check cashing places to borrow money against myself when Suzi became ill. That was the same time I ran off the road on the way to the vet, and my car was out of commission , that was a very bad day. Somehow we pulled through and Suzi got her meds was observed for the rest of the day and came home.
When it comes down to it , I think you have a few options. Surrending her to a rescue, scramble for the funds, or return her to the breeder. I also know when times have been tough we have sold things. For me, I would actually sell my car to get the money. But that would be me. What are the chances of her survival? Is she strong enough to have the surgery?

Sorry if people are leery, but it's only natural. You've gotten some really great advice here thus far.

I'm sure you can understand someone coming on here new and almost soliciting donations makes people become questionable of the situation.

I urge you to do what's best for you baby right away-LS isn't something that can be put off, waiting too long is seriously risking your dog's life.

They donate a lot of needed surgeries and treatments to rescue animals for student to practice on.

However in the end when you go to a place like Davis you are getting the best in your area, those that are also teaching others and using the most up to date methods.

YT people are so tightknit and generous that they want to help so badly and scammers know where to look. Now, NOT saying the OP is one. As long as donation solicitation doesn't happen I'm cool! To the OP: If you can not find help monetarily what will you do with your puppy? Also, as Concretegirl said, we'd love to see pictures. Also, please forgive me for being leery, but I'm sure u can understand.

I don't know anything about Davis but I live not very far from Cornell University. They do very little in the way of helping people with sick or injured animals. Of course they are in an area where they can get all the sick animals they need.
I can't tell you how many people around here have had to have their animals put down because the local vets only do routine health care and the only referral is to Cornell that whose rates are sky high. I don't think most people in this area have even heard of pet insurance.

Someone needs to write some very wordy but to the point letters to the dean, facility administrators and the university contributes-it's all about who's running the place, the code of ethics and department heads-which means getting to the heart of those who control the money-especially if you know those organizations & individuals who make donations to the university, when they make a "suggestion" you usually see the impact of it in policy change.

Davis makes money don't get me wrong, but it's not really a for profit effort on their part they are trying to cover their costs and educate and research.

I can't say for sure but there are a couple different options here so it might also be market competition.

Saying all that-these types of treatments and referrals are by no means cheap. Cost of owning a pet.
