How much is too much? We went to the vet the other day and Tut's weight was almost 3 pounds, I dont know about you guys but that sounds like a lot for a 3 month old puppy. I feed him a half a cup of puppy chow a day, is that too much? Thanks for the help, |
You are not feeding too much. Under 3 pounds at 12 weeks means your pup will likely be less than 7 pounds full grown. Seven pounds is the standard for the Yorkie. :) |
Roscoe was about that at 3 months and he is barely 5 pounds at 11 months old. Sukie was the same at his age and as stayed on the same curve. She is almost 5 months now and weighs 3.5 pounds so she didn't gain much just as he didn't at this age. |
Okay thanks, that makes me feel much better. So how much do you think I should be feeding him? |

It depends on what food you are feeding the puppy though honestly as to how much a day. We feed Royal Canine. For us we just feed Sukie what she wants, because as a puppy this young the chances of them overeating is very slim. My vet actually told me to do this because we are a very active family and she is goes for two walks a day plus other activities. The key is to do walks and have playtime with them and excersice them even at this age. A puppy will not over eat but they may not eat enough. We feed her every 3 hours and she nibbles until she is done. She MIGHT go through 1/2 a cup of food a day but some days a few nibbles for, just depenending on her. She is tiny and very healthy though so I have no worries! I did Roscoe the same way and he is a healthy almost adult dog who is never overeats and is very in "shape". |
meesha went fr 2.1 lbs at 11 weeks to 3.1 lbs at 13 weeks, she has her 15 week appointment wednesday, I'm betting shes somewhere between 3.5 and 4lbs, but we;ll see. At 15 weeks she now weighs mmore then her father LOL, i'm guessing she'll be around her mothers size which was 5.?...something lbs. Our vet said let her eat as much as she wants. i keep royal canin puppy food in her dish, she eats when she wants, free feed i guess, but she's not fat at all, so it works for her she's just gotten taller and longer lol |
Prissy weighed in at 3.7 at her 17 weeks...not sure what she will weigh when full grown but honestly we don't care she has us wrapped around her little paw. Yoshi and Prissy are our furkids and we love them so much... |
Think Gizmo was like 3.2 at that age. He's I think almost 6 now. 5.3, but he's been putting on weight. But sounds normal to me!:) |
hi , Tut is so cute and i love his name. well i also feed oscar 1/2 cup per day plus a few treats. i split up between 4 feedings. at 12 weeks when i picked him up from the breeder he was 4 pounds. now at 18 weeks he is 5 pounds 10 ozs. |
Oh my goodness! :) I hardly dare tell you about Harry!!! He was 10 lbs at 3 months  !!! He's just over a year now, and weighs in at 16 lbs - but he's all muscle, not an ounce of fat on him (maybe I should follow his 'diet' :D). But that's 'over here' - where he's a 'very typical British' Yorkie! Sally + Harry x |
Oh harry sounds adorable. Would love to see a pic. Yorkies rule ! Big or small , we love'm all...... |
