Dry Paw Pads? I was cradling Katie Scarlett in my arms this afternoon while she took her nap and I was rubbing on her paw pads. I do this often to keep her used to hands on her feet and just because I like the feel of her pads. Tee hee! But today, I noticed her little paw pads were kind of dry. I read where this can be common in the winter months. Should I put something on her paw pads? Will they crack? I don't want her to be in pain or anything. They were not cracked from what I could tell and no blood, but very rough and dry. Definitely feel different than usual. Any help? Thanks guys! |
Haven't had this issue personally, but I would think you could rub a tiny bit of coconut oil on them (if you have some on hand)... it works great on skin issues (furkids and skins alike) and it's ok if they lick it. |
I second coconut oil, and Bag Balm is good too if you have some. |

If there is any salt being put down outside, it can really dry their paw pads out. Might want to wipe her paws off with a baby wipe or damp washcloth after going outside. Heck, just being winter time, there is less humidity and I know my skin is drier too. I wonder if they are just naturally toughening up a little now that she's older and going outside more, running around more, etc.? |
I think Gemy posted a while back about this ointment to put on their feet that is used by dog sled teams. Hopefully she will see this thread and share again. I'm sure she would not mind if you PM'd her. |
I borrow my son's Musher's Secret dog paw pad wax he buys it for his Alaskan Malamute, and it works great on my lil ones... plus I don't have to pay for it..:D:D hugs, |

Mushers - I remember asking about this a while back. We don't have much snow 'over here' and Harry's not a boot-wearing kind of a guy! If not - try some good old fashioned Vaseline! Also, your little Katie Scarlett has only just got over an anaesthetic - which is extremely dehydrating for both Littlies and humans alike!
