Need advice Lexi, our little mini schnauzer has a split nail. I don't really know what to do except to try to cut it off but it goes across the nail. I don't think its all the way through but I put some triple antibotic ointment on it and put paw softner on her feet. She never hardly ever goes outside and I don't know how she hurt it. Has anyone ever dealt with this and I sure don't want it to get infected. I just read where they say not to seal it because it could seal infection in. Any advice would be greatly apprectiated. She is a really big baby too when it comes to treating her for anything. |
I think I would have the vet look at it or I would call and see what they think. |
Does it seem to be bothering her? |
If it's in the quick and the vet thought it might be ok and she wouldn't lick it off, then perhaps super glue would hold it until it grew out. |
Yeah I would at least call one of the emergency vets near you and just ask them what you should do. |

I have not experienced this but a good friend of mine has a Maltese that had that problem, recently, and it got infected and turned into a bigger problem. Watch it closely and at least call your vet to ask what they suggest. Good luck.... |
We just found it today so they close at noon on Saturdays. Then, of coarse of all times we have 2 doctors appt. starting at 9:00 Monday. I will call my vet but usually it takes time for her to call me back. It doesn't seem to bother her because she runs and plays with the yorkies. She is such a sweetie and has the sweetest attitude. I just hope it will be okay. We had thought of clear finger nail polish or super glue but when I read it could seal an infection in, I thought better leave well enough alone. Her nails are out long right now which is probably why it happened. We got her from a vet that raises and shows schnauzers so she is show quality. Her hair and her nails are so thick. He used a dremmel on them and kept them very short. I am just always afraid I will hit the quick and hurt them. Thanks everyone for your advice, just have to wait and see what my vet wants to do. In the mean time I will just keep the ointment on it and maybe soak it in abson salts. Thanks again. |
If it's not bothering her I'd say leave well enough alone. If she starts gnawing or it's getting red, warm to the touch, or oozing, then it's infected. Good luck! |
I will just keep a close watch on it. I am one of these mama's that take them to the vet when they sneeze but better safe than sorry. I am still going to call her Monday though and see what she says. I hope she doesn't have to go on antibotics. The way that it is split is kinda in the middle of the nail not like on the side where she could get it hung on something. Almost like her nails were dry and it just cracked. ??? Just don't know. But like I said, she has the thickest hair and nails I have ever seen. We have always had schnauzers but her hair and nails are just more than I have ever seen on one. |
