This is why I'm a vegetarian!!!

 I don't judge people and their cultural norms but this one made me sick. Thank goodness someone was able to "save" all these babies.

How awful!

All depends on what your parents do.
Some cultures routinely eat dogs, cats, insects, and other things we would gag over. Others worship cows and even drink their urine. On PBS I saw people bow down to rats and serve them milk on silver plates. Some people eat monkeys, others worship them. Even some very well known religions believe that eating pigs (pork) is forbidden and a sin. How we think about animals usually has to do with religion and or our culture.

SophieandZiggy 01-22-2012 07:01 AM

This is absolutely disgusting. I'm so glad they were caught!

Totally agree!
I remember reading an article about farms in china that raised st. Bernard dogs for meat. I was horrified.. There were some people who wanted the USA to "do" something about it. How could we when we eat meat? I know we view dogs/cats as different ....(I do) but until we look at the treatment of the animals that is our source of meat we really are being somewhat hypocritical!

What change me was the video Food inc. .. I will not buy certain brands now and have a real problem with pork.. How can we eat an animal that wags its tail?
I do not have a problem with fish and chicken.

I agree with this, it's extremely foreign for us to consider our babies as food.

However, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who think we're barbaric for slaughtering cows, horses, lamb, and chickens.

But I think the real issue here, is how animals destined for slaughter houses are treated. I have no problem acknowledging that some animals are a part of our food chain (there are some animals I'll eat and some I wont), but the welfare of these animals must be considered from the day they are born to the day they are slaughtered (including the way they are slaughtered).

With the case of these dogs, the post said many of the dogs were in such terrible condition or already dead  I would not want a company feeding me beef from a cow that rode on a truck for a few hours already dead and not properly frozen/refrigerated.

In the McLibel case (just watched the video McLibel it's great if anyone wants to watch the horrors of McDonalds and how two environmentalists won against them) they proved McDonalds had inhumane practices at slaughter houses for chickens that were destined for our nuggets and other chicken products.

If any culture is going to eat meat, they must do so in a humane way, the care of these animals may not need to be at the level we treat out pets (although my great grampy used to let us name and hand feed veggies to the cows we'd later eat each year) but they should be handled appropriately to assure the animal does not suffer while it's destined for a plate.

On that note, I totally would NEVER eat dog, cat, or horse meat :thumbdown.

The food supply in this country is fubar. The corporations have taken it over, and only one thing is important. The all mighty dollar. Look at the history of Corn Syrup as a food additive to understand where it came from/where its going. (IMO, it's where ADD comes from)

There is a way to fight this. Buy from local farms/farmers. Better quality, less additives/antibiotics/pesticides etc. All for a marginally higher cost.

If people eat these kind of animals then fine, we eat cows, chickens, lambs, pigs, here in France they eat horses (not me!) I don't see how this is so different.

What I do object to is when animals are kept in such appalling conditions prior to slaughter or who are subjected to pain, discomfort, torment and a generally crap life. These animals should be killed in a painless and humane way.

What I REALLY hate is animals being skinned ALIVE for their fur, now that is disgusting. :(

Animals are just food to many of the people in China They may use them as watch dogs sometimes. I have a friend from Korea that visits China at least once a year. The pictures she has taken of abused dogs would make your heart break. They beat them, throw rocks at them and starve them. I'm sure there is a different level of the abuse according to what area of China they live in but it is all too common.

gracielove 01-23-2012 09:52 AM

BTW.....if any of you use makeup brushes, don't buy them from China. Use synthetic and help spare some poor creatures some suffering.

That truly is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen!

In India cows are sacred.

In Hawaii (traditional culture) and Korea dogs are eaten-these of course are not Yorkies but a breed of wild dogs.

Same in Australia.

In Germany horse is an upscale meat.

Personally I boycott Chinese goods because of the government's choices on humanitarian policy, political choices and of course animal treatment-don't buy any fur products from China in the least, coats and scarves are often made of dogs not rabbits or even synthetic fur as labeled.

However to each their own preference in dietary choices-my only hang up is just because you are going to eat it doesn't mean you shouldn't treat it Inhumanely.

The only chicken I eat (yes eggs too I also only consume hormone and antibiotic free) is free ranging.

When I go to the local burger places (Toni's Surf Side Burger Shack Philly Cheese Stake Shoppe) I occasionally eat cow-local grass fed organically raised free ranging cows-I even know the farmers and wave to the cows when we drive by them!

You are what you eat and I beleive in karma also so while I am a carnivore I prefer my meat lived a decent life and was humanely treated and humanely slaughtered.

I know, right. The thing is I even remind myself this stuff is happening and watch because I think, why should I be oblivious to this kind of thing. Why should I pretend like it is not happening when it is?

I literally cried my eyes out after watching it and I believe it has scarred me for life! Sometimes I think about it and I start welling up, horrible!
