I have been waiting and growing out Brody's top knot and muzzle for almost a year and the top knot did fine growng out, but the muzzle is still a 'fan' in front of his eyes that just gets bigger as the hair gets longer. The groomer assured me he was "just in this awkward stage" but I was starting to wonder if/when it will lay down as it seems to grow up toward his top knot rather than out over the muzzle. He will be 2 in March, as will Mia, but she has a little longer muzzle, which I attribute as being the difference 'cuz hers lays down beautifully. I slick Brody's down with water and sometimes a little aloe, which 'hardens' a bit and is non-toxic if...when...he licks it , but I never heard of top knot gel. I really like looking the little guy in the eyes ...if I could only see them. :p |

Yeah...over 9 months....May 14, 2011. When we got him, he had 'the fan' plus a 'visor' that looped down over his eyes and over the fan...and the day we got him, he'd had a grooming appointment at...well, I'll not say that...just that I found a good groomer instead. I also won't say what his ear hair looked like. I was amazed he could see at all. I trimmed the muzzle and let the top knot grow, clipping it back with everything I could find (when I was with him) until it got long enough, then banded it and let the muzzle grow. I am so ready for him to be able to see out to my satisfaction. :D |

Where do you all get the topknot gel and can you use that close to their eyes? |
1 Attachment(s) ok.. I have been trying to grow Remy's hair too. It sure has been a mission!! At one point she looked more like a shih tuz with the fuzzy face hair. The groomer cut the hair on her face without my permission.. I was so upset. So after reading this post I saw a pack at the grocery store.. they work!! I have tried them before but they were too big. Thank you!! |

How long have you been growing out the muzzle - over a year  Yikes....poor Trixie looks like she has a sunburst in front of her eyes and it's only been a few months....ugh. Hope I don't resort to scissors again. |
I also ordered the gel from Amazon. It works great smoothing down the 'stagglers'. |
4 Attachment(s) Actually, I guess I lied...it's probably closer to 7-8 months 'cuz I trimmed his muzzle at first then took groomer in early Aug. I have also used a tiny bit of foam mousse mixed with water and aloe gel to hold down the muzzle hair longer. I just don't like 'feeding' him anything unnatural, and there is no way he won't lick it there. Got him 5/14/11. The first 3 pix are 5/22/11 and 6/7/11...4th is 8/9/11. after bringing him home from the groomer. |

The brand is Goody.. 2/3 of an inch. I am so glad I read this thread and tried them! Thank you beautiful Rosie ! Yes.. I know.. I guess it's not the top knot that I was growing out but the muzzle.. The hair. Steven the eyes and the nose! |

Ya think...Lol! :D Looks like Mia's head without her top knot. ;) But poor Brody's top knot hair loops into his mouth without a band, and so much breakage, I think because I accidentally ordered latex bands instead of non-latex because there were so many choices and sizes and my clicker-finger got impatient and... Mikki is a little doll baby and such a cute name! I love it ! :) |

It is not so much the top knot..but the hair over her nose and between her eyes. I was so mad when the groomer cut that hair! I also have used the latex bands..but have to put in two or three in a row.. Kinda like a braid. |

Can you buy the tiny scrunchies at Wal Mart? |

At this link you will see latex free bands. I buy them in the 3/8" size because Gracie has very fine hair. They hold her slippery hair very well and I can put a bow in her hair after the grooming bands are in place. For the most part I just use a clip on bow. Once the grooming band is in place you can clip a little bow on and it will stay in place. I have tried the scrunchie but they just did not hold as well as the smaller latex free grooming bands. toplinepet.com They are almost at the bottom of the page of this link. |
The last time a groomer cut Gracie's top knot it took a good 4 months to get it to grow back to where I could keep it out of her eyes. I grow Gracie's top from the break in her nose up though some may just grow from the top of the eye up. You can place the latex free bands closer to the front when the fur is too short for regular top knot placement. I have done two little top knots toward the front just to get the hair out of her face. I give Gracie The Missing Link which is a natural food supplement that is a great boost for skin and coat as well as other nutritional issues. I think Petco sells it now. I sprinkle it on her food and she eats it with no problem and she is quite picky about what she will eat. |
