Jealousy Issues I brought home my new furbaby (Cooper) on Jan. 19th. My older dog wants absolutely nothing to do with him, and growls at him when he goes near her. She isn't harmful in any way towards him, just has a huge attitude when he is around. When he is on my lap, she comes over and tries to push him out of the way, and gets as close to my face as possible. Any advice on how to fix this issue? Also, while Coop is usually with me all day at work, he seems to be more excited to see others then he ever does with me. Yesterday I left him home with my husband to see if it was just because he was with me all day, but when I got home yesterday it was like he didn't even care. I tested it a little bit. My husband and I sat the same distance apart from him and each called his name and he kept going back to my husband. When I pick my husband up from work he jumps out of my lap to run to him. These may just be jealousy issues of my own, but does anyone have an idea as to why he wants everyone else more than me? I take care of him, have him with me everyday, play with him..but the only times he comes to me when anyone else is around, even if I haven't been with him all day, is when he is tired. |
Hi! Welcome to YT! I have had to deal with jealousy issues with my two girls. I will be honest, it is a challenge. But can be managed. Many others on here gave me lots of advice on what to do. Here is the thread I started and the advice others gave to me. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/con...l-problem.html Hopefully you will be able to find some of their advice useful as well. Now on to the other situation. When we first got Rosie she wanted nothing to do with me. Only my DH. I was so upset. It really really bothered me. With that said, she is now the biggest mommy's girl ever! :) Give it a little time, you might be surprised what happens. Again, Welcome!! |
I read someones advise that it could take 30 days to have a new pup accepted. I kept this in the back of my mind while Ziva decided what to do with Abby and Abby became more comfortable with our house. Abby is now 7 months old and has found her own special way of handling her bossy sister, and I don't think Ziva would ever let her leave! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. :) Great advice above. My first boy had jealousy issues when we brought home the second, although the two got along great. Time and patience were the best remedies. I also made sure to put the older one first for everything. Some things were worked out in days, others weeks, and a few things took a few months. |

Congratulations on your new addition! I just went through this three weeks ago when we brought Bear home. Ziggy was great with him but Sophie acted like she was going to attack him. Two days later, he was curled up and sleeping against her! Just give it some time. |
Thank you guys SO much for your advice! I will be patient and let you guys know how it goes! |
It takes two weeks for my girl to accept any family member that doesn't give her a treat. |
