Help I just found a Tick on Gizmo I can't believe this. We live in a subdivision but we do have a vacant lot across the street. I groom Gizmo at least once a day and usually it is several times a day. Today I found a tick on his face just behind his mouth. I use to live on a farm and I have removed many ticks from pets, DH and DS and I think I can remember having a couple myself. Here is what I did to get him off but if anyone has a better way please let me knw. First I burned a match and after blowing it out I touched the hot end to the tick. I was told this makes them turn loose. Then after trying several times I got him by using my tweezers. Gizmo Bless his heart did not know what was going and wasn't sure he liked it. I was able to get the full tick and believe it or not he was still alive. I was told if you just pull them off with the match you can leave the head in.. Did I do the right thing? Is there any easier way? |
I use get twizzers. I think a hot match would make the tick dig in and then the head could be left. |
Not sure about using the match. We always used the match after we got the tick out. But that was to kill it. I was thinking that I heard something about using alcohol? I am not positive on that. Maybe someone else can give you some advice on removing them. |
Our vet said to use a dab of rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean the spot. I use tweezers to remove ticks. Teddy had a few last spring, a couple of which made big bumps that took a couple of weeks to go away. Even nice subdivisions have ticks. They are everywhere. |
On the horses we were always told to cover them in vasaline, that way it smothers them inside and they fully back out in order to try and breath. The only ones I've ever found were still crawling on the horses and were not burrowed, so I never had to try it. Haven't found one on Harley yet. We then would burn them to kill them once we got them off. |
