small pups Is there a way to tell if your puppies are going to be tiny one's? I heard it's usually the runt in the litter, I have 2 that are small, 2 that are a little bigger, one quite a bit bigger, and another that is twice the size of the smallest one's. Mom is about 9 lbs, white yorkie, dad is a babyface short legged yorkie and he's a small dog, about 7 lbs before he started eating some table foods. I'm a little temped to keep one if I thought it might not get any bigger than 5 or 6 lbs but how do you tell honestly? Can you determine it by the weight size when they get a little older? They are 2 weeks old today. Mom doesn't seem so interested in feeding them that much now, though she is, just not so frequently, how many times a day should they eat? |
I don't know but welcome |
Best to take such questions to the Breeding section. Sounds like all your babies are out of the standard therefore there is no way to predict the genetic crossing results which would only be anyone's best guess at best. Have they seen a vet if you feel they are not getting adequate nutrician they may need a supplement at this critical time. Your bitch may need supplements as well right now. Have you bred before? |
I agree u should take this to the breeding section- Right now the only thing you should be worried about is the health of the pups and Mother- |
Out of standard? Is that because one is short legged? Both are yorkies. Yes, she's had 2 sets of puppies before and they have always done fine. I'm going to have her spayed though. I just don't know when I should since she just had her babies. These were an accident, happened while we were all asleep. I have heard that a yorkie shouldn't have puppies more than 2 or 3 times, but then I've heard that some have had 5 or 6 sets of pups. This little group of angels are getting at the stage that 75% of the time they just want to cuddle up together and sleep. They are so beautiful !!! I wish I could keep them all. lol. Yes I have had them all to the vet. He checked the babies and mommy. She fed the pups about 4 times today but the start with, she stayed with them constantly. I just don't remember my other pups sleeping so much. When her last set of puppies got old enough to eat puppy food, it might have been 3 weeks, she seemed like she was weeing them away a bit from her. Where they are only 2 wks, I just think she needs to spend a bit more time with them. I will call the vet and see if this is okay or if I would need to suppliment some milk for them. |
They even bark and howl as young as they are. One sounds like he meows. It's so cute !! I love my babies, and don't worry, I will make sure they are taken care of properly. |
For the best advice I would take your questions to the Breeding Section- you can have admin put it there- |
You really cannot tell until they are adults and have reached there adult weight sorry everything else is just a guess. |
Well she is feeding them very well now, like she should be, I think they'll be okay. Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what I'll do as far as keeping one or not. I really want another little girl around 5 lbs, not that I need one, I have 2 adult yorkies and my daughter has a poodle as is. |

Your pups are most likely going to follow the weight of the parents for example my breeder told me my girl was going to be very small because she was tiny at 8 wks but she grew to about the same size as her mom 7 lbs |
I hope your other yorkies are neutered/ spayed. |
Do you keep your pups with mom until 12 weeks? Just wondering...... |
Out of standard based on your description of the color weight and features. "Mom is about 9 lbs, white yorkie, dad is a babyface short legged yorkie and he's a small dog, about 7 lbs before he started eating some table foods" *Careful with the table foods. However mine are both extremely out of standard as well. I have a 21# Schnorkie and a 12.2# Parti Yorkie. I love them dearly & appreciate their lack of conformity. My only point in stating such is because they are out of standard this can mean, not to imply it is true but it can mean they were not matched to produce standard offspring (or as close to it as possible) or in a controlled matching, meaning well anything can pop out. Genetics are always a roll of the dice however without careful selection the possibilities are much more vast. I agree you should really be posing these questions to experienced breeders who can also assist you in size estimate charting-which will be just that an estimate of finishing size based on the parents and grandparents and development of the pups themselves. |
Do you have the pedigrees of these dogs? Do you know what the ancestors of your dogs looked like and produced? That is helpful information and can give you some information about what your pups my turn out like but the genes a dog carries go all the way back for many many generations and even a well bred dog can produce a throw back from far back in the generations. A pup that starts out small may actually surpass the other pups in the litter in growth. It's a wait and see usually. The pups need to be nursing often and the mom needs to be given extra supplementation while she is nursing the pups. |
