Cleaning & Neutering Should this be done at the same time or is it better to have it done separatly? I've read different opinions and various vets have differing opinions. What would be the consensus here on YorkieTalk? |
Cleaning as in a dental cleaning? Personally, I would get it all done at the same time, that was he is only put under once. |
Yes a dental cleaning. It was explained to me that the two procedures should be done separately because the dental is a non-sterile procedure as there is an infection and that a neutering is a sterile procedure and they don't want to risk infection going into the bloodstream. |

They are usually given antibiotics after the dental anyways! I would do them both at the same time. |
how old is your dog, if under a year I would wait on the cleaning unless something is wrong with his teeth. Lola had some baby teeth that did not fall out so during her spay she had those removed, but at 6 months did not need her teeth cleaned |
Sounds like your pup has an infection somewhere in there which is why the dental is required. I think most of us are thinking of having baby teeth pulled at the same time as a neuter, which is what I'm hoping to do. No infections here though. I don't know if the existing infection changes the story at all though. |
If there is an infection going on already, the vet should put the pup on antibiotics at least 48 hrs Before the procedures anyway. I would ask for the antibiotic before the procedures & then have Both done at the same time. Wondering why your vet did not offer this. |
Troy is 2.5. He'll be 3 this July. His teeth are pretty bad and has 5 retained pup teeth. He did say that there will be antibiotics and blood work prior to the procedure but he feels that it's not safe to do them at the same time because he doesn't want him under for a substantially long time because he's so small. |
FYI, A neuter takes under 5 min to do. I do not believe the extra few min would be a huge diff. If it were 10 or 20 minutes then I might do them separately but not for 3 or 4 min. But he Is Your baby so bottom line is that You have to make your own choice .:) |
Neuter would be done 1 St while under anesthesia and then the cleaning would be done. |
