Inheriting 3 Yorkies! Hello, I am about to inherit 3 adult Yorkies, and I would appreciate any input! They range in age from about 3, to about 2 years old. The oldest is half Yorkie and half Maltese, and the other 2 are all Yorkie. I will be picking them up in about 2 weeks from Las Vegas, and will be driving them to my home in Southern California. The drive is about 6 hours. They will be coming home to a fiesty Jack Russell/Chi mix. I've had dogs all my life, but never ones with long hair  They are crate trained, but that's about it, they are sweet as can be, but have no manners. I have been reading and reading this site and it's been great, but I'd love some specific advise for my situation. Thanks a ton! ~manda |
Wow, you are going to have your hands full. Since these dogs have been together it will probably be a little easier for them to feel secure as their pack is in tack. There will be a period of adjustment with your current dog however as to the "pecking order". Since none are puppies the serious health concerns won't be as bad as with tiny pups. I would have pee pads available if they are used to using them, or even if they just need a period of adjustment. Good luck, and God bless you for taking them in.   |
Welcome to YT and congratulations! Indeed, you will have your hands full, so be prepared for a few rough weeks. Your Jack/Chi will have a huge adjustment period too. Just curious, where are the pups coming from (what type of situation)? This may help others give advice for a successful transition. |
You are one "lucky dog!" hehe |
WELCOME TO YT!! Your house is going to be hoppin!! :D...We just got our third yorkie!!! My 2 girls have VERY different coats...Sadie is black and gold...her coat is very silky and around her face, kind of coarse...it does grow by not to the floor...Lillie is steel and tan, she has a BEAUTIFUL coat that I would have to trim or it would drag on the floor..Lillie used to let me brush her until I got her looking beautiful...not anymore...it's a fight to brush her..Bentley, our new little man.....not sure about his coat yet....he is only 5 1/2 months old...I would say he is going to be silky...All this being said. I made the decision to puppy cut them. Much easier to take care of and they look adorable! I groom them myself. I've heard to many horror stories...Make sure you post some pics of your new furbutts! |
Do your introductions carefully..take all the dogs to a neutral spot, like a friends house or park, and let them all get introduced. Then the best thing is to keep the new dogs in a secured area, and let your number one dog have the run of the house, but allow them to sniff each other thru a gated area..watch everyone closely. I would also make sure everyone is up to date on shots. you do not want to have any problems with something getting introduced You do not want mayhem to start by having them all on the same place at the same time. Good Luck and Congrats! |
Inherited, as in their previous owners are no longer with them? This may be a sad time for the pups. Their mommy/daddy is gone, they're going to a new place, and they are going to have to re-learn everything. My friend inherited her mother's dogs when her mother and father passed away. It was an adjustment period, but they seem to be getting along just fine. The one that was really bonded to her mom is still not ok though. :( It's obvious she wants nothing to do with anyone, except my friend who looks like her mom. Anyway, just be patient. It'll take a while for them to adjust to you and your jack russel/chi mix. Have lots of patience for them. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! :) I agree with everyone above that there will likely be a period of adjustment. Supervise the dogs closely to see how they are getting along with Jack Russell/Chi. Does he or she have experience with other dogs? All 4 will establish a pecking order, but do everything for your JR/Chi first to let him/her know that he/she is not being replaced. Greet first, put down food bowl first. Establish a routine for doing all activities at about the same time each day. That will lay a foundation for you to teach your new doggies some manners. Best wishes! |
Great tips already given, but I wanted to congratulate you on your new babies. Gonna be a 'hot time' at your house soon...fun...exciting...exhausting, til they all settle in ! :D Good luck...take care! |
Congrats and yes your home will be a new experience for them, just take it slow and enjoy. |
I wanted to say Welcome to YT and congratulations to you! I know it will be a learning experience, but these little guys will have you wrapped around their paws in no time! :) Good luck to you! |
