How do you make your yorkie go to her crate? I am having a terrible time getting Holly in her crate. She has gotten so smart that when she sees us getting ready in the morning or getting ready for bed she will run! She's not so bad other times of the day bc she doesn't really know when to expect going in. Now that she is older and faster, she is about impossible to catch. She likes her crate, never cries once in, she just hates to be made to go in it. So, how do you train them to just go in? |
I'm still working on getting Sophia to go in it herself too. I usually pick her up and then put a treat in her crate. Put her on the ground, and then let her go in. Gradually I've been moving farther and farther away from the crate when I put her on the floor. So far, it's been working and we're up to about 4 feet from the crate. I hope eventually I can just tell her to go in the crate and she will! |
When Callie was a puppy she did the same thing but now shes like ok mom lets go I'm sleepy. I taught Callie go to bed. I would say go to bed and pick her up and put her in her crate and give her a treat and after doing that every night for awhile she knew what go to bed meant but it didn't always work when she was crazy hyper and not wanting to go to bed but chasing them can make it turn into a game. |
i pick up morgan and give him his special bone and put him in it |
I would actually put mine in the crate, but everytime I put them in it, I would say 'go home' and now they go when I say go home. |
When I first got mine I would toss a treat in there, he would get in and chow down and I'd close the door. Now, he is pretty ready to go in the play pen without a treat...(which replaced the crate at 5.5 months old, he is 6 months now). |
Treats, treats, treats. Oz gets his kong filled with wet food and a hard treat ONLY when he goes in his play pen (started with a crate). That is by far his irresistable treat. He actually jumps over the side of the play pen to get to it. Find what your pup can't resist and make sure you give that only for crate time. Make sure you never, EVER put your pup in that crate for anything bad. Leave the door open all the time when your pup isn't in it, and keep it in a room where all the action is. Throw other occasional treats into it and leave the door open so the pup learns that it can go in and out and not have the door closed every time. Your dog should get totally comfortable and feel very safe in the crate. |
Bella only goes into her crate when we have to go out or I am busy and can't pay attention to her. I would give her a treat and she would go in. I would always pick her up, tell her Mommy loves her, give her a kiss and tell her we had to go out for a while and she would be fine. Now whenever she sees me put on my coat or get the car keys, she goes in by herself. I never put her in her crate to punish her. I always leave the crate door open and lots of times she will go in by herself and curl up in her bed and go to sleep. |
Mina only gets peanutbutter on her KONG if she is in her crate. "Go to house" is the command that we use and she will automatically run for the crate if she sees me,the KONG and peanutbutter jar. She rarely gets locked up for more than 3hrs,usually alot shorter than that. Mina's crate isnt large enough for her to spend an entire day in. |

Pebbles loves her crate. I just point and say "get in your house" and she goes right inside. It doesn't even matter where she is at she turns and runs. :) Good luck! |
I am still crate training Prissy and I leave her crate open all day, she will go in sometimes to get one of her fave toys and then play with it..But as of now I do pick her up to go out and to come in since it is a long distance to the door from the crate..I tried letting her come in by herself, well she off and running so I think I will start doing the harness thing that Megan said,,she will come sometimes but is easily distracted so that does need more work. I find these post so helpful and glad that everyone is nice. |
I've always fed Mags in her crate, so it's never been a problem getting her to go in. All I have to do is say, "Mags, want nummies?" And she runs right in it. If it isn't time for her meal, I always give her a piece of her kibble just for going in anyhow. |
Tracy, I use kibble as treats too and Prissy loves it... |
