Good Morning Everyone! :) I have a 7 yr old Yorkie named Riley. I got him from a lady that could no longer keep him when he was 5 yrs old. I have noticed a discussion about Yorkie's having a bad odor. I give him a bath and a day later when he comes in from outside, his smell about knocks you over. He does not roll in anything. I watch him when he is out and our yard is fenced in. His teeth are ok. The odor comes from his over all body. After he has been inside awhile it is no longer noticeable. I have had big dogs all my life (and still do) and this is NOT the same outside smell that they have. What can I do for this? |
It is a smell they put out when they are outside to let other dogs know they are there as far as I know there is nothing you can do about it but sense it goes away after being inside for about 15 to 30 minutes I wouldn't worry about it. Callie gets the same smell when she has been outside for a while. |
One of my poodles smells like this. We refer to it as "the little boy smell",like kids that have been outside playing in the summer. It does get better, the longer he is inside, but comes back when he goes back out. He is 10yrs old and it has just always been there. |
Yoshi has always done this but it is worse on sunny days..thankfull that it doesn't last but a few minutes, then he is all good smelling again.. |
If its a fishy smell the anal glands need expressed. MY male has never had an odor so Im not familiar with a male smell |

Thanks so much for your replys! It seems to be fairly common so I won't worry about it any longer. I will just not love on him when he first comes in! lol. I love my "little boy" and wouldn't trade him for all the good smelling dogs in the world! I would have had a Yorkie a long time ago if I had known what great, adorable little dogs they are! |
Just one more quick reply! :) I know 'that smell' - but Harry doesn't have it (although he's a very boyish boy!!). He used to - but I changed his food. For instance - when I was adding a little cooked chicken liver to his dinner - I could smell his whole skin smelling 'liver'-ish!! Sometimes, it's what we feed them that creates 'that smell' which permeates their body  :D Happy sniffing! Sally + Harry x |
