You hear about this all the time... My brother and SIL are both in the military stationed in ND. She called this am to let me know what happened to them last night. They know another military family - he just deployed overseas and his wife went to Texas to be with her family for the 6 months he is gone. This couple have 2 dogs. They LEFT the dogs in military housing asking neighbors and friends to go over, let the dogs out and feed them. The dogs were not being cared for properly, so my brother took the dogs into his home but told the owners he would only do for 2 weeks as he has 3 children and a Bassett Hound himself. He did this to give them time to find proper care for the pups. One of the dogs is a Chiweenie, never been around young children - EVER. Is very yippy and is agressive to people and other dogs. Last night this little guy bit my nephew on the cheek and left 3 holes - I have seen the picture, right under his right eye. Nephew is 5 y/o. Cheek is a little swollen and you can definately see 3 holes. They called the owner to let her know they could not keep these dogs as they are not pet friendly to their children. The owner actually brought up taking the dogs to the pound. My SIL was dumbfounded. She doesn't want the dog around her children anymore but is not up for taking them to the pound and just dropping them off to Lord knows what. They are hoping the overseas military member will call today with a solution to this as his immediate supervisor was called and told of the situation. Can you imagine leaving your dogs to "whomever" would be willing to stop over to let them out and feed? Sounds like their house now has pee and poop all over it and their living room furniture has been destroyed. IMO they abandoned these dogs - they should NEVER be allowed to keep them or ever get another pet - EVER. |

This is so sad. I can't fathom leaving my dogs behind with no real plan as to who would take care of them while I was away. Those poor dogs. |
You are right. It does happen all of the time. I've read of similar stories too often. People just leaving and abandoning them, people looking around to give them away, etc. |

Why in the heck would anyone in the military even have a dog?? You KNOW going in that you have a chance of being deployed at any time. |
Have your brother call some of the local rescues to get these dogs placed. If that doesn't work, then have him call law inforcement on base. Someone needs to get these dogs placed quickly. Who all has keys to that house now anyway. I'm sure if the police is informed of this, then those people would not be allowed back in. They would have to find a place to live in town. Minot or Grand Forks. Don't know which base the dogs are at. |
If the family is residing in military housing, I suggest returning the dogs to their home and contacting base security (non-emergency #) and/or housing and let them know that there are animals in the home that aren't being cared for. Some bases take animal abandonment more seriously than others, so I don't know what kind of response you will get there. The base here takes it very seriously. If they don't live in military housing, you might try contacting the landlord if they rent. Please be sure to have your nephew see a dr. if he hasn't been already. Antibiotics may be needed. |
To be honest, it isn't the husband's behavior that angers me. He's doing his job, protecting his country. His wife on the other hand, has no excuse. She should have stayed in the home she shares with her husband and taken care of their furbutts. IF she wanted to spend the time her husband was gone with her family, then she should have made darnwell sure the pets were allowed to go also. If not...stay home. Sad situation for those dogs, and a sad situation for those taking care of them out of the goodness of their hearts. I'm glad his first shirt was told. |
