Jumping off the sofa? I have heard that it isn’t good to let small dogs jump up and down furniture, so we have stairs for Jaxon to get up and down the sofa. He gets on it using the stairs no problem (probably because he can’t jump that high, lol) but almost never uses them to get down. He knows how to use them, and sometimes does, but most of the time he gets excited because someone is at the door, or he drops his toy and can’t stand to take the time to walk over to the steps (we have a huge sectional sofa and the steps are at one end) so he just jumps off from wherever he is. So, my question is how small is too small to be jumping off furniture? At 5.5 lbs is he big enough to handle it without causing physical damage? :confused: I have tried to make him use the stairs as often as I can but it’s almost impossible to keep him from jumping off, aside from banning him from the sofa, which I just can’t do it’s his favorite place to be.:( I also want to mention that my sofa is a little higher than average and we have hard wood floors. |

My adult yorkie, Riley, weighed in at 4 lbs and he was just fine jumping up and down from the sofa onto hardwood floors. While yorkies are predisposed to patella problems, this can occur with daily walking, running, stairs and other normal activities. I have a 4 mo old puppy, Chloe, weighing in at 2.5 lbs and I don't let her jump down yet, but will when she is older and heartier. IMHO, I think it's fine for Jaxon to sprint down when excited without causing any problems. |
My five pounders have a ramp for the sofa and bed. One will jump from the sofa if in a big hurry but the other wouldn't even think about it! So far no injuries (knock on wood). |
Thank you, that makes me feel a lot better! I guess I won't be so uptight about it then. I'm just always worried about him getting hurt! |
My 2lb 13 ounce yorkie always jumps up and down from my boyfriend's large sectional sofa. He has carpet so he isn't landing on hardwood but when I'm at my mom's house, I make him jump up from a pillow and down onto the pillow cause her floors are hardwood. In the bedroom, we have steps for him to go up and down. I did catch him one time jumping off the bed onto the carpet and I told him no. The bed is almost 3 feet high. |

Thanks so much for bringing this up! Bolton will use his stairs to get up on our high bed but not down. I am not so much worried about injury but long term arthritis or other conditions that my previous Yorkie had. How do I get him to go down???! He is driving us nuts and by the time we get to him he is already on the floor. |

And yes my little baby is mommy's evil kenevil...gives momma a heart attack! He also likes walking on the top of the sofa in my boyfriend's barroom. Something a cat would surely do. I caught him a few nights ago doing it and I almost choked on my food. He just gives me that look like "what now? I am pretending I'm a kitty" haha |

You'd probably have a heart attack around my Jackson, LOL. He's a big 16lb'er but he is a little monkey man. Always leaping from couch to couch, jumping over things, on top of things :rolleyes: He's crazy.... |

I have stairs for them at each end of the sectional as well as the hot tub cover. They use the stairs pretty regular for up and down. The stairs that I have are foam, maybe this makes a difference? The stairs in the sunroom for the hot tub are plastic, Hot Rod doesn't really care for them but this is the only way he will get down. Maggie doesn't have any problem with them. Maybe try putting a treat on each step when you want him to go down? Put the treat as he goes down the stairs so he can see what it is that you are wanting him to do. Maybe this will help. |
1 Attachment(s) i also have a pekingese and she does not jump on or off anything she does not even do steps we had to put a ramp at the front steps for her to come up on to the porch and it is only one step high as you can see she will stand there all day for someone to help her up hubby said she does 4 things eats, sleeps, pees, & poops thats my girl |
My little Lu is just under 3.5 lbs and there is no possible way I could ever convince her not to jump on to or off of our couch. Our couch is average height from the floor and we have area rugs in the living room and family room. Lu has jumped off my bed as well and that just about gave me a heart attack as my bed is extremely high and I have hardwood floors. Scolding her was enough to convince her not to do that again. With your dog being 5.5 lbs and even though your couch is a bit high, I don't think I would worry about him jumping off your couch because of the height (unless he has shown some kind of joint issues already) but you might want to consider an area rug for him to land on. I think my concern would be the lack of traction because of the hardwood flooring and the possibility of landing funny or his legs splaying funny and causing stress to his joints in that way. Just my two cents worth. |
I had to laugh....once they start jumping off the couch...try stopping them! I remember when Copper was young, I made him a set of stairs out of foam blocks covered in fleece. I was proud when he bounded up the steps onto the couch...then leaped right over them to get down! Oh well, I tried. So far, no injuries. He just turned 2. |
Thanks everyone for your input! I guess I just have to let him be a puppy and continue to scare the crap out of me, lol! :rolleyes: But I will for sure be looking into getting an area rug, so at least he has a little landing cushion! :) |
