What to tell the groomer? Chloe's hair is getting pretty long and she needs her hair cut but I am so afraid. I dont want her hair to be short but I dont want it too long either I am just afraid bc of all of the stories I have heard. What do I tell the groomer to make sure that they get the haircut right? Bc if I tell her just a trim then I am afraid she will get shaved or something. And how often should you get your yorkies hair cut? |
The best advice I can give you is show then a picture of what you what her to look like. And make sure you emphasize that you want very little trimmed off. I had to learn the hard. Good luck!! |
great advise dhudson4 was just going to say that... |
Thanks! I got that advice from my vet, Dr.Kim Hammond is the best. The is no experience like trying to convice yourself after a groomer has hacked your dogs hair off...."It's not to bad!" lol  |

Yes please be very specific. Last time I took Nikko I told her I wanted a trim, that's all. When I came back she told me, "you aren't going to recognize him" and I thought she meant because he looked even cuter than before (not possible IMO :) ). Anyway, she hands me my baby and he was totally shaved!! He looked like a little marine and so skinny!! I was upset but she said she had no choice because he was all matted. It took me a while to get used to it (I too repeated the "it's not that bad" mantra LOL). Next time, we go with a picture. |
I can understand your concern. The grooming nightmares on here make me wonder if Shelby will ever get the beauty parlor experience. If/when we do this I will take a picture and a specific list... Be sure you know what you want and don't want done. I am one of those people that wouldn't want hair around the eyes done and it seems like groomers do that unless you tell them not to. (they call it cleaning up the eyes) good luck. |
Hang in -- I have had both good and bad grooming experiences. I took my dog to the groomer 4 or 5 times before the groomer and I had the same picture in our head of what I wanted my dog to look like. And - I think it is acceptable to have your dog cut a little shorter than you might have wanted. After all ----it is a haircut! And, with a little bit shorter cut, it does last longer. BUT - we do not want our dogs "butched." Sometimes matts do have to be cut off, and sometimes I knew that my dog did not have a lot of matts, and that this was only an excuse for the "too short haircut." Anyway - I love my groomer, and we did struggle together to get the right cut for my dog, and now she knows what I want. Even so, it still ends up a little shorter than we both want once in a while. But we all survive. My friend has a show dog - a bichon - and she spends $65 a week to keep her dog looking perfect. ----------We don't want to go there, do we!!! It makes sense that if we want our little Yorkies cuts to last 6 weeks to two months- they will have to have too start out a little shorter at first. ******* I didn't like the way the groomer cut one of my dogs years ago, so I went groomer-jumping looking for a groomer that would cut her the way I wanted. I think that was a mistake. I never got anywhere. I think it's better for your dog to get used to one groomer, and it's better if you stay with one groomer and work together until you get the cut you want. My groomer says that everyone who comes in has a "different picture" in their head, and it's hard to always understand exactly what people want. A picture is very helpful. Carol Jean |
I think the main thing is to be as explicit as possible - the groomer can't read your mind! My cousin is my groomer and she's fantastic. But I have to explain to her exactly what I want. Otherwise she'll do what's in her head. Bring in a photo of the cut you want if you see it in a magazine or something. It's the same as if you or I went to get a haircut - I know I don't always get what I ask for!! Good luck!! |
