Hello everyone newbie do u prefer boy or girl?
 

Hello my name is Liz im new to this site and will be new to a yorkie... Never had one but am excited. Just wanted to say Hello and hope to get to know all of you. I just wanna ask you guys how hard is a yorkie to house train? Any tips or things i need to know? Do u prefer boy or girl and is there a reason why? I want a girl to doll her up. Is there a difference in a silky and yorkie or are they the same ? Also is there a way to tell color they will be i love the color they have as pups and the scruffy looking pup hair..... By experince a 4 week old pup at 1lb now may weigh what as adult? alot of questions im curious, excited and nervous:aimeeyork

I am so happy for you that you have decided to get a Yorkie. You will discover that they are wonderful little dogs full of spunk and mischief and alot of love. There are a few things that you need to know about these great little dogs.

First of all they are more difficult to house train than other dogs. They have wee little bladders and they cant hold "it" as long. Also I swear that they are just plain stubborn LOL. It took me almost a year to train Chloe!

I recommend reading as much as you can about yorkies before bringing one home. They do have special needs as pups. For one I wouldn't bring a little one home before they are 12 weeks of age. A good breeder will insist upon this generally.

Make sure that you only deal with a reputable breeder. Mine required a lengthy interview before she would allow me to take home a pup and at a cost of 1200 dollars I was impressed that she wasnt simply trying to get me to take her LOL.

Yorkie puppies are prone to hypoglycemia which is when their blood sugar levels drop. Make sure that you are well informed regarding this issue as it can be fatal. It is easily treated with some Nutri-cal but you need to be able to recognize the signs. They do grow out of this as they mature.

As puppies and even as adults they are pretty delicate little ones, we have learned the yorkie shuffle :) in other words how to not step on your furbaby.

I have a girl as that is my preference. I have found that girls tend to be a bit easier to train and yes they are fun to doll up :)

There are differences in types of hair. My little girl has very fine cottony hair-- a bugger to keep from matting and requires daily brushing. Also Yorkies are known for dental problems. Be prepared to have some baby teeth pulled as it is common for some to not fall out. You will also need to brush your little ones teeth as they are prone to tooth decay. Also a big no no is rawhide. I learned that one the hard way. It gets stuck in their teeth and could require professional cleaning to remove.

The average weight of a healthy yorkie is between 5 and 7 pounds. I would be wary of any breeder advertising "teacup" yorkies. A very small yorkie requires special care. Chloe is a healthy 5 1/2 pounds and she is just a little scrap of fur :) The only way to gauge what they will look like is through the appearance of the parents and of course this is not a guarentee just a guide. My breeder does specialize in dark coat yorkies and Chloe does have a beautiful tan and silver coat.

These are just a few pointers. There are many things to learn about these amazing dogs and there is a wealth of information not only here but also on the web in general. Your breeder is a great resource as well.

We've never had a female yorkie before. We have two males. They are still puppies (five months old and 8 weeks old). Our five-month old was potty trained in two weeks flat. We brought him home when he was 8 weeks old and by the time he was 10 weeks, he was about 80 percent trained. He would have accidents but that was sort of expected (he was still very young). At five months, he is about 90 percent potty trained. The accidents happen when the humans accidentally leave the bathroom door closed (he is trained to potty in the bathroom). We are currently crate training the 8-week old and he's doing marvelously. I write down his potty times in a notebook so I can get a better idea of his potty pattern.

I researched and read about yorkies a lot before bringing the boys home (I love researching. It's sort of what I do for a living).

Of course there are exceptions and different people have varying experiences that will sway the vote; therefore we read and researched as much as possible. We made the decision to bring home two boys and have no regrets whatsoever.

I really love boys. They seem to be much more lovey and mine just lives to be with me. However, I don't think I could handle two of my males, so I have a girl as well. They balance each other out :)

I always love females because as a child we mostly had males. We only had one female during my childhood. Getting dogs spayed weren't popular back in the day (telling my age a little) . Now that people are more educated your pet doesn't have to puppies or go into heat. I always get my dogs spayed because I am not qualified to breed and I have no desire to learn. I also like to pretty up females but you can dress up males too. Actually I have a female bichon and she's a tomboy. She hates getting pretty up. She only likes a bandana and no bows.:D

I have both. My female is so fun to dress and wants me to carry her all the time, but she really is a daddy's girl when he's around. My males are so sweet and loving all the time so I guess I don't have a preference either way.

I have had both and think that you can't go wrong either way. My sweet angel dog,Vivi, was a lovebug and so is my little boy, Bear. Bear has a combination of cotton and silk coat and looks like a puppy at 15 months. I keep him in a puppy cut and although he has gotten a bit lighter, his saddle is still dark. Vivi was tan and silver. My advice is to research your breeder as this is the most important step. I learned the hard way, as my Vivi struggled for 6 years with liver shunt, the sad result of unscrupulous breeding for teacups. Run the other way if a breeder advertises for teacups or boasts of small sizes. Bear, is a healthy 5.8 lbs and he is still a very small dog. His breeder interviewed me to make sure I was the perfect match for one of her puppies. Good luck in your search :)

We always get females. Our past experiences with males has not been as good as with females. Now, only females for us.

I have seen wonderful male dogs too though, so good luck with whichever you choose.

I have had both. They have all been wonderful. I only have the 2 girl's now.
It really is just what ever you perfer.

I prefer females. I think a spayed female is the perfect dog :) But, as strange as it may sound, some of the prettiest yorkies I've ever seen have been males...and I love a good looking yorkie!

I don't really have a boy/girl preference for pups...depends on the individual temperament. That being said, I am so head-over-heels in love with my little Yorkie boy that if I were to get another pup, I'd probably go for another boy. :)

We chose a boy because he was to be my "forever baby" when my last (of 4) kids started kindergarten. I read that boys get more attached to the female owner and girls get more attached to the male owner. It seems to be true because Reggie definately knows he's MY baby! He is all about hanging with my husband until he hears me come home, then he only has eyes for Mama.

At the time, I thought he was a little difficult to house train, but we got him at Christmas and he didn't like to go out into the cold or wet. I will say that once trained, he does VERY well. The only issue was the excited trickle that he took a while to learn how to control:)
