Tut pees on the floor
 

So my 10 week old puppy Tut knows were he is supposed to relieve himself. But every time I turn around he is peeing on the carpet. When we first got him he would let you know he had to go and then go when you set him in the potty area, but now he goes when I'm not looking. What do I do? Thanks,

are you using puppy pads?

I know a lot of YTers use puppy pads and have great success, I however, only taught Teddy to go outdoors as I don't want him to think it's ever okay to potty in the house. It just takes a little more perseverance in terms of battling the elements (rain, cold, wind, etc.) but I don't have the issue of him peeing on the floor, in the beginning of training he would sometimes have an accident by the door, but we cleaned it up and stayed strong. Now our only issue is that he rings his bells too frequently (but we dont have accidents)

When it comes to the pads, they have a similar texture and color to carpet so sometimes dogs can confuse them. Also you might want to try using some Nature's Miracle to clean the areas he's pottying on so that he doesn't get use to his smell being there. You can try cleaning an accident with a puppy pad and maybe he will associate that it's okay on the pad but if you see him going on the floor, interrupt him and move him to the pad. We had to do this with Teddy in the beginning, except instead of moving him to a pad we brought him outside.

Since he's doing it when you're not looking you might want to try attaching him to you when he's not crated that way you can get your eagle eye on :)

He is so young still, be patient with the little one. Do you give him a treat when he goes in the right place? If you are pad training him maybe put a few more pads out. I think praising him when he goes in the right place is very important.

At 10 weeks old he does not KNOW anything. There is no dog on the planet actually trained at that age. You need to stay vigilant and use tried and true potty training methods and over TIME he will learn.

My youngest is 17 weeks today and she is still in training and does not have run of the house. She is in her expen with her bed, water, pee pad, toys and chewy's, at nap time, meal time, when I leave, and for the night. I only let her in the kitchen dining room when I'm there to watch her and I keep a pad down. I take her outside several times a day, and in the office/play room when I get on the computer. I have her pad, beds and more toys in here too. The only time she is ever out of my sight is when I have to put her in the expen. Her training is coming along very well. She never uses the floor, only outside or the pad. I would never let her on the carpet or rugs. Those things seem to "make" puppies want to pee on, and they will. She's never been on a rug or carpet yet, and I have not intention in letting her either until she's at least a year old and only with supervision for a few more months after that. This is exactly how I trained the other three Yorkies and they have never soiled inside the house. I put pads down when I can't take them and that's what they use if they have to potty while I'm gone. If the pads were not down, they may go on the rugs........I just don't know and am not willing to take the chance. These little guys can't hold themselves as long as a larger dog. I don't use doggie doors either because I never let them out unless I'm with them.

Completely agree. But yes, at 10 weeks, he is not going to be fully potty trained.

I agree with Yorkiedaze, keeping them comfined to a small area is best, at his age, he doesn't need a large world and at 10 wks he's just a baby and it will take time and patience. My Chloe was easy and pad-trained at 4 mos. But, Willow was not trustworthy until she was a full year old. They are all different and learn at their own pace. Good luck and hang in there.

Definitely do not expect a 10 week old to be potty trained. Shoot, even at 4 years old my Hot Rod will find a spot to poop. I've just recently gone back to "crate training 101" as I gated off the front part of the house.

I kept my 2 on pads and go outdoors with them. Maggie is wonderful with the pads while Hot Rod will pee on it all day long but prefers to go outside for poo. He more prefers to go outside for that. We also have pads in hubbys garage so on rainy and snow days, they can still "go outside".

You will need to have patience, patience and more patience. He's still telling you when he has to go, your just not picking up on the signs. Tethering him to you is good but if you don't see the signs, it won't really help.

The second you even suspect he's got the urge, onto the pad (if you choose to use) he goes and make up a command that you use only for this purpose and once he's in the act, do you say it. Praise him a lot and treat if you wish. This command should only be used when he's in the act so he can associate it and once he does learn it, you can use it so he will know what to expect. Good luck and it will come, just have patience. :)
