Q on traveling from Philly to Boston Happy New Year, everyone! :) I will be traveling with Choco from Philly to Boston in about 2 weeks. Since it's much cheaper to purchase an extra seat for Chocho than carrying him on as a pet, the US Airways has booked an extra seat under my name for Choco. They also informed me that the airline does not require any vet certificate for traveling unless he's a service dog. However, they told me that each state may require a health certificate for traveling. I've been to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website, but I couldn't find the information for PA or MA. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge in this matter? Thank you and happy holidays! |
I'd ask your vet... a Health Certificate isn't (or wasn't ) all that expensive last time I checked. Better to have it just in case. Haha! Love that he has his own seat! |
I'm surprised that the agent booked a seat for the dog, very surprised, I'd be careful of this when you get to the terminal, be early, remember everyone is supposed to have picture ID, if you booked this ticket on line or over the phone, who knows, there might be trouble. I don't know, but this is the first time I have ever heard of this, and we do fly, and US Air, but that's not to say it doesn't happen, I just have never heard of it, please, if it works keep us posted. I would definitely have the health cert. though, just because, goto your vet, like the day before your due to leave, the cert it's self is cheap but you generally have to pay for an office call, though that depends on your vet. The cert only lasts 10 days/2 wks, I've forgotten so don't get it early. You probably won't need it, BUT, better safe than sorry, so you don't get denied boarding. Good luck and have fun. US Air stews are some of the best. |
Booking an extra seat, also allows you an extra carry-on too :D I did the same thing with my pup ,with Jet Blue, when flying to a family wedding. I had a time crunch and didn't want to wait for checked luggage. It worked perfectly and for me was on $20 than the pet price. Definately worth it. |
Just a question...so if you book a seat for your pet..does your pet get to be placed on the seat in the carrier or do they still have to be left on the floor in the carrier? |

My carrier was in the window seat next to me and seatbelted in. The stewardess looked at it, but didn't say anything :) |
interesting about booking a seat instead of the pet ticket, I did not think that was allowed, I have flown with Lola 6 times and the 125.00 to 150.00 is going to keep me from bringing her more frequently. Can you tell me which airlines have allowed you to get a seat, have you had any trouble with it. |

Some airlines, like Southwest, have a dog fee ($75) lower than any of their flight fees, so it's cheaper to pay the dog fee. *also, seat tickets are subject to any additional surcharges...the dog fee isn't...so have to compare actual numbers not advertised ticket fee. |
KazzyK810, Thank you for your reply! Choco and I flew without much trouble last week. US Airways made everything easy for us. :) As you mentioned, I purchased an extra seat under my name for $40 instead of carrying him on as a pet. (I take an air shuttle, so an extra seat is much cheaper than the pet fee.) Just in case, I also got the health certificate; I visited PAWS Wellness Clinic and paid ~$35 for the basic health exam, rabies shot, and the health certificate. I love this place! No one asked me to show the document, but it was just comforting to have everything ready. :) |
Just to add... if you carry on two pets, you are required to purchase an extra seat for the second pet according to the airline staff! |
I am very surprised about the booking a seat also, I know Delta Airlines will not allow it (I tried with Sophie Kate). Delta charges $100.00 each way to store the dog in the under the seat in front of you (which I believe I already paid for that space). Delta told me that they could not do it since the FAA requires ID for every passenger and well Sophie Kate has not gotten her Driver License yet. |
My friend also told me that a Golden Retriever sat next to her in first class when she flew from NYC to SF. I think she flew by United. I guess some airlines allow and some don't...? |

That is interesting. I was hoping to take Katie Scarlett on her first flight this March/April when my new nephew is born. I wonder if they will let me book an extra seat? I will definitely try that out. I have already worried about her under the seat in front of me. My feet always get cold on the plane and I would worry about her freezing to death. If they do make me put her under the seat in front of me, I think I will put her in something extra warm and have a good warm blanket in there too. I wonder if you are allowed to put those disposable heating thingies in their carrier for the plane ride? Like the 'hot hands' thingies? Not sure if that is allowed or not though. |
