Traction or Lack Thereof
 
Bubba seems to have a difficult time keeping his feet under himself, outside he is fine, inside he is constantly wiping out :confused: I look and feel his pads and they seem really smooth and the combination of not weighing enough, maybe. I tether him to me when it's "free time" (ironic I know) and I find myself walking so slow so he doesn't slip so much. Will his pads eventually toughen up, or will he have to just figure it out?

They don't do great on hardwoods and tiles. They will learn to walk on it in time, but everyone does have to be careful when they are playing that they don't hurt themselves.

Thanks, that would be us, tile in the kitchen and hardwood throughout the rest of the house. Hope he can figure it out :animal-pa

I just took a peek, hair is looong between his pads, I will try to trim these while he's napping. I never thought of that, it is really long, and dirty :( more reason to keep it short.

Oh! I never thought that you didn't trim that. It does need trimming on a regular basis.:D

I trim the hair on the bottom of the feet then apply moisturizing hoof dressing (for horses) occassionally, to the pads and toenails.

I trimmed Bubba's "toe hair" :D last night, this morning's free time, traction was better, still had a few slips, but maybe now he can work on his footing without the issue of the "hair barrier". I feel a little embarrassed and sad that I didn't catch that :(

I don't know why you're embarrassed. If you've never had a yorkie before, then you wouldn't have thought about it.:)

Oh I suppose because of all the other things that have been occupying my mind about him, shopping for bows, a cute Juicy carrying bag, custom bedding. I have realized in the last week that all of those things come second to training him and adjusting to a new breed in our family.

I will spoil him rotten and want to be able to take him along anywhere with me, I just need to get the basics down first. I hope that explains the slight embarrassment. :o

Don't be embarassed, I have had my Yorkie for three years and I never thought of it either. See, another reason I love Yorkie Talk.
