Have You Experience This? I took Sophie with me to our vet on Tuesday to pick up her heartworm meds, and they asked to weigh her since she seems to be gaining weight. When they asked about her calorie intake, they said that we are not over feeding her, and they wanted to do blood work because she is now at 10lbs. They were concerned about thyroid. Well, Thursday evening our vet called and said the blood work looked okay accept for the cholesterol. It was 1,800!!!!! Normal is under 200! She said she has no idea why it would be so high. She had me bring Sophie back in on Friday for a fasting blood draw, and we are waiting for the results. Anyone had this experience? |
Oh my! I hope it's nothing serious. I'll keep her in my prayers... |
Sorry no experience with high cholesterol in Yorkies. When mine was high, I began to eat oatmwal every morning. It worked it went down. |
praying that it isn't anything serious |
I hope it's nothing serious and maybe just a thyroid issue or something like that. Sending good vibes for Sophie.:) |
I have no experience with that but I hope everything is ok and please let us know how everything is when you know. I will pray everything is ok. |
Low thyroid can cause high cholesterol. What are you feeding? How about snacks? Any table scrapes? Do you take her for walks, does she get much exercise? Exercise can help bring cholesterol down and also help her lose weight, but that cholesterol number is so high, it makes me think it’s more than just a diet or exercise problem. Sometimes thyroid problems don't show up on the routine test and you have to do another more specific test. |
Also Cushings can cause high cholesterol. |
I hope the fasting blood work is better, I also hope it was just a mistaken test. |
We will pray that all goes well. Please keep us posted. |
Thanks for all of your responses. I should know more from the second blood test by Tuesday. The thyroid and Cushing thing make me think that at least maybe we can treat something. I will post when I hear something. |
Just checking in on Sophie. Any news yet ? |
I hope that the repeat blood work is more definitive and provides a direction for treatment. |
Our vet called last night and said the fasting report came back, and it is 250. Much better! She said everything else was fine. She said that she wants to put Sophie on a low fat/calorie diet and do blood draws in a few months. She said she thinks she is fine. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. My little teapot needs to lose some weight. |
Glad to hear the positive news. If the vet recommends that she lose a little weight, please follow the recommendation. Kirby had to lose weight for her knees. I know it's hard with those puppy dog eyes begging you for all sorts of things but it's the best thing for her. Try to get her to be more active inside the house if necessary. Sometimes Kirby and I walk laps in the house especially now because it gets dark earlier. We try to get her moving to burn calories. I guess it's just like humans. Cutting back on calories will only works if we are physically active in some manner. I use a measuring cup to measure the amount of kibble to feed Kirby daily. You may want to ask your vet how much kibble to feed her daily. Since my vet's recommendation , Kirby has not gained a pound. It's been going on 2 years now. I also feed healthy snacks like raw carrots, and sweet potatoes. Again, I am so happy to hear that your furbaby will be fine. |
