Vaccinating at home - Canine Spectra 5
 
First off, HELLO EVERYONE! I've been lurking around here on YT for quite some time--even before I purchased my new baby girl Xylie--and I just want to say how glad I am that I found this site and thank you to everyone in advance for all the help and advice that I'm bound to get. :)


Now, down to business:
Does anyone have any experience with the Canine Spectra 5 Vaccine?

I know that many of you who do vaccinations at home prefer Vanguard Plus 5 or Duramune Max 5, but both of these brands come in packs of 25, and I only have two dogs, so i really don't know what I'm supposed to do with all the extra doses.

As far as I know Canine Spectra 5 is the only 5-way vaccine that is offered in single doses on revivalanimal.com, and I was about to purchased it until I read this thread on YT about a fellow YTer who had trouble with the Spectra 7 vaccine.

Now, I'm a little paranoid, and I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and buy the Vanguard anyway and just toss out all 20 of the extra doses that I'll have left over.


I'm really new to all this, so any help/advice would be much appreciated!

This might be a dumb question, but why don't you just take her to your vet to get the proper vaccines? Not sure why anyone would give their own vaccines

I have a shih tzu that goes to Banfield Pet Hospital at Petsmart for his vaccinations. I was going to take my baby yorkie there as well, but the breeder that I got her from told me that she once lost a whole litter of puppies by bringing it to the vet, so now she does all her vaccinations at home.

I did take her to the vet for a puppy check, and she is healthy in all accounts....all she needs are the rest of her vaccinations. She already got her first round of DHPP.

I did give mine most of their shots myself but you should go to the vet for the Rabies and Kennel cough shots. This is just my opinion of course. Good luck

I use vangaurd +5 to vacinate my dogs this is the same as my vet uses..i have always had very good luck with mine...my puppies wait 3 wks apart on all shots

I would never do my baby's vaccines myself I would be afraid I would do it wrong, give her the wrong dose or anything. I would find a vet that you like other then Banifield and take your puppy there because puppies need wellness checks and every dog should at least have a yearly exam with blood work and be on monthly heart worm meds.

Some experienced breeders do their own shots but it is not for the inexperienced. Take your puppy to the vet in a carrier and don't let it out in the waiting room. Don't let it out in the exam room until you have someone disinfect the exam table in front of you. Do not place your puppy on the floor. The main problem with the vet's is the chance of contamination from a diseased animal. If you have a good clean vet that is on the up and up they will not mind disinfecting in front of you. It is much safer to have an experienced vet take care of your puppy. I know it may be tempting to show your puppy off but until all it's shots have taken effect keep your puppy away from the public.
Personally, I think it is irresponsible of your breeder to suggest that you vaccinate yourself.

I am a retired Vet Tech. I used to vaccinate at home, but since I now have multiple Yorkies, I choose to have my vet do it. With all the new vaccines and companies making changes to the old vaccines, if any pup has a reaction, I have no way to handle the situation at home. It's just not worth the risk to me.

Especially with a puppy and the vaccines being stong enough to immunize a 100 pound dog, definitely not worth the risk.

Also since core vaccines are only needed once every three years, it's not worth it to me.

To all of those who replied to this thread, you may be glad to know that I am now bringing my puppy to Petco for low cost vaccines from Luvmypet. The vaccines are administered by a licensed vet, so no more worries!

Hoping there not giving your puppy to many shots at one time.

No, I'm making sure that they're only getting one DHPP at a time....no lepto, and their rabies at a separate time. I'd rather make more trips than risk putting too much in their little body.
