Roxy and Zoey my littlest yorkies both have dragon breath. No dental infection per vet and retained puppy teeth have previously been removed. They get their teeth brushed and chew greenies or dental bones several times a week and eat primarily hard dog food (blue buffalo). No one can figure out why. The other two rarely have bad breath unless they get into something foul smelling outside. My golden Lucky never had bad breath and neither does Buddy. |
Heres a question. Are you giving your little one rawhide? I didn't realize that rawhide is a no no for yorkies and Chloe had AWFUL breath. Turns out it was a piece of rawhide stuck in between her back teeth and even with brushing it stayed put. Well lets just say rawhide does NOT improve over time. I did get it out once I discovered it but it was sooooo smelly. Had to take her to get checked over and she was fine but learned that rawhide is a bad idea. Also a suggestion for getting a puppy used to getting their teeth brushed. You can buy gloves that have what looks like velcro on the pad of the thumb and forefinger, you use them in combination with a special paste that comes in a jar and is very thick. By rubbing the teeth with your gloved finger they are less intimidated and later will be more accepting of an actual toothbrush. Worked great with Chloe :) |
I'll second the "No Rawhide" deal. Bradley would get the worst gas I've ever smelled in just 1 day of trying to consume a small rawhide. It was UNBEARABLE! |
No rawhide here! Just the good stuff for this baby. We stick to natural treats, no rawhides. She loves peas and green beans :) She just turned 6mon old yesterday. Last vet visit he mentioned that in the next few weeks I would notice her losing the rest of her baby teeth. He mentioned a bit of blood on toys, excessive chewing....but nothing about breath. However, I haven't noticed any blood either...just the excessive chewing and teething. I have tried what some people have said and I put a teething toy in the freezer to help her gums. She just goes to town! lol We also finished transitioning her to TOTW food. When I googled "TOTW and breath" it came up with several reviews on it giving their dog bad breath. Maybe its that?? Not too sure, I guess it could be many things. Thank goodness my vet is understanding. I call that office so often!!! Lol...but I would rather be safe than sorry ya know? I would rather call a million times and have them see her than take the risk. |
