Hello! & HELP !!! Hello to all of you Yorkie lovers :) it makes me happy to know that theres a support community when you need it, and to be able to support other people! :) My name is Cristine and Im 19 years old from Puerto Rico but I moved to college in Florida a year ago and I had to leave behind my 5 year old yorkie with my mom. Unfortunately she hasn't been able to take proper care of him and he spends most of his time alone in the apartment.. hes not very potty trained and barks at a lot of things.. but for some reason when i visit hes a great dog. Im very hesitant and stressed that its alot to take care of when i work and go to school but at the same time im excited because I know hes not to happy over there & now I wont be alone either.. having a dogs love is amazing so i cant lie that I want to give it a try. I live in a carpeted apt. with roommates so I need to take proper measurements and hope that he will adjust to all the new things.. But I really dont know anything about training him or setting proper boundaries so I really need help. any advice ??? |
Hi, Welcome to YT! So are you taking him here to Florida with you? Honestly that sounds better for him and for you. If it's possible can you get training/obedience classes with him? Most of the time it's the owner who needs training on how to train their dog. Dogs can learn very quickly if trained correctly. If that is financially not possible, watch training DVDs and learn how to properly housebreak him. Leash him to you (on a harness) when he is inside and take him outside on his leash & harness every hour on the hour. When he goes potty outside give him a small treat. Taking him for short walks helps to stimulate their bowels so they are more likely to go potty while taking a walk or running around a yard. Its going to take a bit of work for sure, esp given his age, but he is trainable. :) Good Luck! |

With that being said as well. WIth the training, it you want to prevent accidents a belly band may help as well. However, keep in mind that a belly band will not train the dog. That's where you come in. Good luck! |
Sorry, just wondering what happened with his house-training the first 4 years of his life? And if you're at college/working/partying - who'll be looking after him while you're doing all that? Sally + Harry x |
Thank you so much for all the advice first of all! About his previous training, well I was about 13 when I got him and my parents didnt really help me train him but as for the potty training, we had training pads in a corner but even with that he wasn't to obedient, but then again that is because WE weren't obedient enough. So hopefully I can try and train him if it isn't to late? |
