sleeping w/head on the floor& itching? 1 Attachment(s) I just brought home my new yorkie meesha yesterday, she has been doing amazing, she hasnt cryed for her mom, slept all through the night,is already trained to use the potty pads, drinking and eating from her dish and already feels so comfortable! i'm amazed, i thought itd be hard to potty train and she'd be crying alot, hopefully she stays like this, her personality is amazing!.. i just have 2 questions: 1st she has tons of comfy beds i bought her, but no matter where she is she sleeps with her head on the floor, i'm scared the bloods going to all rush to her her lol, why is she doing this? also shes been itching alot, i checked all her fur for fleas, theres none, the breeder bathed and groomed her before i got her, maybe she was allergic to the shampoo, i was thinking maybe i should put her in some warm water with something to sooth her skin?shes new to my home and only 10 weeks, will it be ok to bath her? if so what would be somthing good for her skin?i'm kind of scared to give her a bath, when was the first time you bathed yours? ,how do you avoid getting water in their ears and eyes? hers a photo of how she always sleeps, i put a pig puppet under her head so it wouldnt be on the cold floor lol |
What a cutie! Congratulations on your new pup. :) Maximo has slept with his head hanging out of his bed onto the floor from the time he was a wee pup. I saw his breeder's pics of the litter and he was the only one doing it, lol. He does it less as an adult. Nothing to worry about. Relative to the itchies, have you taken her in for her wellness exam at the vet? You will probably be going sometime soon for more vaccinations. Be sure to mention the itching to the doc. You can bathe her anytime. Use a good shampoo and conditioner formulated for dogs. Preventing water from getting in the ears, and soap from getting is a bit of a trick. Go easy with soap on top of the head and rinse mostly front to back of head. Then down the front. Some people put cotton balls in the ears or plugs. I hold the ear flap down and then use an ear cleaner with a drying agent afterwards. |
I would take her to the vet about the itching so many things can cause it. Callie my yorkie likes to lay with her head off of her bed too sometimes. |
3 Attachment(s) Scoobers did that for the longest time! After he itched himself to welts I found out he was allergic to corn- I was feeding Innova but it was residual from the food he got in rescue. |
ok good to know her laying her head off the bed on the floor isnt too weird lol, it looks so uncomfortable for her tiny head LOL.. and yes she has a vet appointment next week, i will deff be asking them, thanks so much!:)..i owned a sheltie before, but this is my first yorkie, shes just so tiny and so much different then my sheltie when he was a pup, going from previously owning a 50 pound sheltie to a (well i don't know how much she weighs yet) but tiny yorkie, is a whole different world lol,, i guess i'll try giving her a bath tomorrow ,thanks for the cotton ball idea i'll try that:) |
haha scoobers is hularious, same thing as my meesha...too cute, hmm theres corn in her wet food, maybe i'll stop giving her that see what happens too.. |
She sure is a cutie... |
I would wait to bath her until the vet checks her out, where is she scratching? If she is just scrating her ears, it could be an ear infection, in which case bathing her may make it worse (if more water gets in etc). You had asked about bathing and ears, what I do is grab the head palm facing the nose, thumbs heading towards the back of the body, and slide my hand back until I fold the ears over the earhole, then I squeeze a bit harder so that I know I have completely plugged the ears, before rinsing the head. Also until you know how they react to water up thier nose be careful not to get any in there. Harley likes to blow bubbles in his water dish so I don't care if I squirt his nose, but some dogs do. Congrats on the new baby. |
What an adorable furr baby! Part of the joy of owning a Yorkie is the quirkyness they come with. My Maxie burroughs up next to me, not stopping until he's completely upside down, laying on his back, with his paws folded across his chest. it's so funny... he's over 2 years old, so it's not a latent nursing thing -- it's just one of his many, many, adorable quirks. |
My Ella sleeps all the time with her head hanging off her bed... I was worried about her also when we first got her but now I see there are so many weird things about yorkies and that is just one of them!! You will enjoy yours they are wonderful!!! Congrats on the new baby. |
thanks for all the help!, aha i'm noticing all the quirks the more comfortable she gets, shes so funny lol, yorkies deff have quite the character! and glad to know other peoples dogs on here sleep like that too!!!, i was just thinking all the bloods rushing to her tiny head, i hope she'll be ok lol! as for the itching,it was so bad i had to do something so, i filled a tiny bucket with water and held her head like deonk1 said and just put water all over her, she actually liked it! lol! then i put a warm towl from the dryer on her then hair dryed her, she loved every min, she contiues to amaze me lol she hasnt itched since, so hopefully it won't continue to be a problem, my sheltie had alergies and so many skin problems so i'm hoping thats not the case with meesha too.. and deonk1 , i see your from nova scotia too!!, glad to see a yorkie owner on here so close!lol |

Yorkies come with their own set of rules. I have had dogs all of my life....but never one like Bella. They are special. I find they are just like having a baby...so much fun. As far as your little one itching...my Bella did too when I first brought her home...then she was fine. The air is a lot drier now because we have our heat on and that is what caused Bella to itch. She is fine now..she got used to it. Definitely mention it to your vet though as other members said it could be allergies. I wouldn't change her food until You speak to your vet. Good luck with your little one and stay on this group...the members are amazing with all of their knowledge and so willing help with any questions you may have.:):):) |

Mine are all on Taste of the Wild now-its so much easier not having to buy 3 different kinds of foods! Well Elvis is still mostly on a raw diet, but he does eat some kibble. |
