I need Help.... 1 Attachment(s) So I have a few questions for all the yorkie experts on here... I have a 4 month old yorkie who has had health issues in the past she had 2 hypoglycemic episodes in the past one at 3 weeks and one at 8. She is now almost 5 months old and has not had any more episodes, but I have a few concerns, she is a very picky eater and wants nothing but wet food, I have tried soo many dog food brands and she hates them all the only she will eat sometimes is Science diet, I really dont want her to continue on that brand because I can tell its not good for her her coat is very thin and she has a lot of dandruff, she is losing hair I think it might be due to the low quality food, I really want to change her to something better or at least give her some vitamis, my friend recommended Missing Link so I'm getting that today, can anyone recommend a decent dog food brand I would preffer it be sold in petsmart because its on my way home, I have always fed my dogs wellness and they did great on it but she just wont eat it. I switched her from Science diet wet food to Inova and she seems to like it. Please help I really dont know what to do, i posted a current picture of her she just got spayed this weekend. |
So Cute! I feed Wellness small breed kibble and Sophie loves it. There are some picky eaters here though so maybe they will chime in |
I add some cooked frozen peas and sprinkle on some parmesan cheese on the kibble to spur the appetite. |
Welcome to YT - what a little cutie pie you have! I would choose a kibble that is a good quality, like Wellness. To coax her to eat, add something to it - maybe a bit of canned Wellness, or some cottage cheese, yogurt, something like that. If you keep changing her food, she will continue to be picky (although with 2 previous bouts of hypoglycemia, I understand your concern when she doesn't eat). Another option you could consider is home cooking...just be sure you add a vitamin supplement to be sure she's getting everything she needs. Edited to add: I also think that if she only eats wet food, that's not the worst thing in the world, as long as it's a good quality food. |
Did she have pre op bloodwork before her spay? If not, she should be checked. Some health problems present with the symptoms you describe, only a vet can tell you what may be going on with her. She will start teething soon, if she hasn't already. This may be the reason for her preferring wet food. Did your vet check her teeth and mouth for any problems? If she prefers wet food, you can always moisten dry food to any consistency she would like. Usually when Yorkies turn 12 weeks, the hypoglycemia episodes will stop. That is one reason it is recommended for them to stay with their birthmoms until then. Any quality food at Petsmart should be fine for her. I would, IMHO, stay away from the super high protein foods though. The important thing is to find what she will eat, and stick to it. I'd really recommend getting your vet to evaluate her overall condition and have bloodwork done. Adding supplements to her food may not be a good idea until you know why her coat is thin and falling out and why she's being a picky eater. Her regular diet is balanced and adding to it may throw her off even more. |
all her bloodwork comes out ok, so i dont know what the problem could be... |

Did they check her for mange? |
Here are some review sites to compare the different foods. For Buster I feed him Orijen and Honest Kitchen but they are not sold at PetCo. I know they do carry Wellness and Taste of the Wild. My baby ate 1 T of wet mixed with a little kibble twice a day. When she was being really picky I either added a tiny bit of parm cheese to the mixture or I served chic n rice with the kibble. I did this until she was done with teething. At that time she was a little more mature and I started putting a little less wet food and a little more kibble. She is now almost 1yr old (cannt believe it!). Breakfast is chic n rice that I cook and kibble, dinner is a little kibble,ya out of my hand its more of a snack. Your baby may need to be fed 3 times a day until she grows some. I have used Simply Nourish wet food,it doesnt look like pate' and looks more like something that I would fix. Kibble is Blue Buffalo and there are several flavors. Good luck! and Welcome! |
