I need help please So as most of you know Brandy has been at the vet for many things since we got her, dehydration kennel cough, pneumonia and then a relapse... SHe has got much better says the new vet but their is still signs for inflammation in the lung.. The pet shop had cover all her medical bills so I only had to pay out of pocket for the emergency visit to the first vet But now to make a choice.. the vet says she off the IV meds and has been doing better, but they would like to take another culture to see if she has a resistant bacteria thats slow the healing process.. which would cost out of pocket 230 dollars.. What do you guys think should I do.. the vet says other wise everything else is ok... she's eating, playing, getting on like a puppy should only that she still had the inflammation in the lung. she said she could come home but I don't want her to get sick. HAS ANYONE HEARD OF A RESISTANT BACTRIA IN PUPS? please get back to me.. help  |
I'm glad Brandy's feeling better. Wish I could help. I know you're worried. Would finding out alter her treatment or is it peace of mind you're looking for. You may want to post this in the sick and injured section, too. Many knowledgeable YTers look there regarding health issues. I hope your little girl continues to recover.:) |
Im sorry you have been going through so much with your girl I hope she gets some relief and gets back to good health |
Is the Pet store paying all of the cost of her care? If so than yes I would have the test done, if it will help get her to a healthier point and closer to completely healed. No question about it! If you are responsible for the cost I would ask your vet more questions about her recovery time and expectations and if the test is absolutely necessary. Than make an informed decision. Best of luck, very sorry to hear of your sick little one but good to hear your pup is feeling much better. |

Prayers still going out for Brandy and hoping she is feeling better soon. |
How long ago was she vaccinated? If it was within the month, her immune system may be working overtime. Once the vaccines are done (30 days), then her body can really fight off the bugs. Bordetella is hard to get rid of too... seems like it hangs around forever... months anyway. If she wasn't vaccinated within the month, then the culture will probably be needed. A Culure and sensitivity will tell exactly what drug to use to kill the germ. Did your vet nebulize her with anything? The nebulizer puts the drug into a mist and the pup will inhale it, getting it directly into the lung. When my old pup had pneumonia, the vet did IVs and nebulized him with three different antibiotics at the same time. |
I would definitely get the test done. Unfortunately, resistant bacteria are plaguing human medicine and are also found in veterinary medicine. I would get the test done, especially since the pet store has been paying for everything but the ER visit so far. The type of bacteria afflicting someone determines which antibiotic will work in the situation. Unfortunately, different bacteria respond to different antibiotics to kill it. The only question I would have for the vet would be what are the complications that can occur in a pup that young? If there is a high complication rate in doing a biopsy on such a young pup, then that would give me pause. |

I would definently have the test done. I work in the "people" health care and we have to do cultures to make sure we give the patients the right antibiotics, some just won't do the job, so it makes sense that dogs would be that way too. And the cost of trips back to the vet and changing abx will add up fast. Not to mention that your baby is not getting better and could get sicker. Good luck!! My rescue Hope had inflamatory pnuemonia 2 rounds and the secound turned infectious. There was alot of complications and it was very hard on her. They never did any cultures ... I wish they had, we had to keep switching abx..... the cost really adds up fast |

You know your right I'm a medical assistant her working o n my RN.. In this case I feel my feelings are clouding my better judgement.. I'll be going to see her tonight... i miss her so much.. |
$230 or risking loosing the dog's life or finding out it's another illness that will only get worse? I'd pay the $230 because she needs a clean bill of health before you can start getting choosy about tests and treatments. Get there then start thinking about what's optional and not IMHO. |
I would get the test done. Sometimes "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Especially if you trust the judgement of your vet. I say it is better to find out and get her the proper care and treatment needed. Since the test might give the answer of what is going on. |
I am sorry to hear she is still not getting better. Buster's kennel cough/pneumonia required different combinations of drugs to finally get rid of the infection. Even though he was playing he still was not quite right. I would definitely get the tests better to know what you are dealing with. Also in case there are other issues the might come up that you need to deal with the pet shop on the more documentation you have the better. Avoid all vaccinations until the infection is completely gone. Best wishes and prayers for you Brandy |
