UPSET- Grooming :mad:Our friend that also has a yorkie in our neighborhood got her dog groomed at Petsmart down the street. So we decided to take Bailey there hoping that it would be cheaper than the one we have now($35). It is good but, we just wanted to check it out and it was right down the street rather than 30 mins. away. Ok, so we got there and there were a lot of people, hey... we thought this meant they did a GREAT job. Man was I wrong. So at the end when they told us the price... $61!!!! Are you kidding me people!! And they did the WORST JOB EVER. Bailey now looks like a flat little robot. They shaved all of her nose off so her face is fluffy and her nose looks terrible, the bow that they put in was way to tight that I had to cut it out of her hair, and we specifically told them to use hypo-allergenic shampoo and they STILL used smelly stuff!! Her coat wasn't great, and for $61 I wanted it to be PERFECT. Sorry for the rant, but I am sooo upset. She looks TERRIBLE. Good thing I still love her. We will never be going back there ever again! GRRRR. Oh I forgot, Bailey was also there for 5 dang hours. 5 hours!!! That was all day long!! I can't believe we took her there. Good thing her hair goes back and we can take her to her old groomer. Man am I upset! Has anyone gotten there pup done there before?? GRRRR! |
I have heard of MANY horror stories from Petsmart and Petco groomers. Why pay someone to mess up your dog's hair when you can do it yourself for free? Note: I was offered a job as a groomer when I was 17, with NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE. that should tell you right there. Hire a mobile groomer, just as much, if not less, and they are done in your own home. Less stress for the dog. I am sorry you baby had to endure that. :( |

The first time Furgie was ever groomed we took her to petsmart. They knew it was her first time....she was also thre forever. When I finally got a phone call thinking they were done, it was really to tell me they clipped her eyelid and had to take her to the emergency vet next door! I was so mad!!!! Needless to say she has never been groomed there since! They ended up paying for all her associated vet appts in the end... |
Sorry your baby got a bad groom, thank goodness hair grows. I wish I paid $35.00 for a groom, that would be the deal of the year for me. My average groom for Sophie Kate is $70.00 and around here that is a good price. I do take Sophie Kate to my local Petco for grooming but only after I had a few grooming mishaps at other "recommended" places. My groomer at Petco does most of the Yorkie's in the area and thats A LOT of Yorkies. Personally I have had wonderful results from my local Petco, in fact they are the ones who fixed one of the mishaps. I personally it all depends on the person doing the grooming, how well they listen to your instructions and their experience (and I would almost say experience with the breed). I am sure you little baby looks adorable, in most of these threads when people post a picture of the mishaps I usually think the baby still looks really cute. |
Oh I'm sorry about the grooming. There is no way I would let Petsmart touch mne. I've seen too many things happen while just standing in line watching them groom. I really don't think any of these people have been to grooming school. |
I have never tried any of the pet stores for grooming. I have a groomer that I love and my furkids go once a month and they love her too. |

FYI I take her to my vet's office to be groomed. They charge $40 for under 15 pounds. I wonder if I got 4 more Sugar's if it would still be $40 total. I'd still be within the weight range :sidesplt: |
Ok, now everyone sit down when I tell you this. This is going to show you how we are here in Arkansas. I pay $25 for grooming. And I give a $5 tip. That is bath, dry, cut, bow in hair, trim nails, etc. The whole works. :) But I do use an individual who grooms from her home. I think that makes a big difference. I was taking Rosie to a shop and it was about $35 if I remember correctly. My groomer is awesome and I am thankful I have her. As far as Petco, I don't go there ever. First, I had been told about the prices which is crazy in my opinion. Second, my girls get so much attention from my groomer and they are there about an hour at the most. I can't handle leaving them there for 5 hours in a cage. Personally, I wouldn't go there and don't blame you for being upset. |

..... Bad grooming experiences = why I do it myself now!! :) |
My vet recommended a mobile groomer - she charged $40 each for both dogs and they both came out looking fabulous. I will be using her from now on. The DogNation groomers charge $60 per dog and they are the closest to me. They both came out looking terrible and I was not thrilled with the groomers attitude. The next one I tried did a decent job, but again, about $60 per dog and I had to drive 20-30 minutes each way. Quite the hassle with a full-time job. So I'm loving the mobile groomer! |
I have always used individual groomers in the past. What I mean by that you either took your dog to their house or their small shop. I have never been disappointed with how they trimmed my toy poodle. I had Gizmo groomed for the first time last week by a mobile groomer who was highly recommend by my neighbor. Since we got Gizmo at the shelter we didnt know if his hair was short or he had been groomed. The first thing she did was come in and meet Gizmo and talk to me. Gizmo immediately took to her which was a good sign. I told her what my long term goals were and then she took him out to the van for grooming. She sent word in that Gizmo had definitely been groomed before by the way he was acting. So now we know his hair does grow long. I was very pleased with her. Right now the way he was cut before it will take several months before he will look more like a Yorkie. She explained to me along with showing me that he is in the process of losing his puppy coat which was wiry. Still not sure what the coat will be....top of head is thin and silky. Body hair is thicker and softer but I would not call it silky. Belly is thinner and seems to be silky. So the jury is still out on what type of coat he will have. She has over 30 years experience and she agree with the forum that he is mostly Yorkie mixed with a Chihlula. She only charged me $45 but I provided the shampoo and no bow. She did trim his nails, checked his anal glands, and then took time out to show me how to brush him between visits. She was a blessing especially considering that I am disabled and unable to drive at this time. JMO I personally think a individual groomer gets to know your dog and you dog gets to know them which makes it a better experience for your baby. My vet also has a groomer and she would be my second choice if Tina quit. |
Yea, petsmart is no good. I took my bichon there about 2 years ago for the first time, And they completely shaved her!!! She looked like a curly haired JRT. So I've never went back to them. I adore my groomer she's a long time friend and only charges me $18 for my bichon's sanitary and $30 for her to get a puppy cut (when I get tired of all the fur)... And Max doesn't go to the groomers because he's still on edge with the blow dryer... |
I was never thrilled with Petsmart groomers especially sense I knew some one who was a groomer there. But I did use Petco for about a year and it was not cheaper and the women did a good job but when she stopped working there I went else where. Finding a good groomer can be hard, but I'm sure she still is cute and it will grow back. |
