Worried My dog will be 4 yrs old in March and about three weeks ago, she seemed to want to go outside like every hour or two (to urinate). I think I should maybe call the Vet on Monday, as that just doesn't seem normal to me. She's only 6 lbs, but I just don't think she should go that much. Does anyone else have this concern? Thanks. |
Well maybe its not anything to worry about (or then again maybe it is), has she been drinking more? If her water intake hasn't changed and she's going potty more than usual then I would talk to my vet. |
It sounds like she could have a urinary tract infection. They are very painful for them and I would get her to the vet as soon as possible. 2 of mine have had UTI recently. Let us know how it goes at the vets. |
Yes, you should get your pup to the vet no later than Monday. A few things can cause this. The most common is a urinary tract infection which is extremely uncomfortable and painful. |
She's VERY VERY playful and does NOT seem to be in pain. Just the urge to urinate often and she seems to drink more water lately also. I WILL call the Vet on Monday. Thanks for your input. |
There are also medical issues that could contribute to her drinking more water, therefore having to pee more often. Glad you are taking her in to the vet on Monday. Dogs hide pain, so she could be in pain and you'd never know. Good luck and keep us posted:) She sure is darling:love:!!! |
I agree with the others, it could be a host of different issues and the only way to know for sure is have her checked by the vet. Glad to hear you are taking her in, sending good wishes for her! |
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! I'll keep you updated. |
Update Hi All, Took Autumn to the Vet on Monday. We couldn't get a urine sample, so based on the examination and her symptoms, he prescribed an antibiotic to treat a urine infection. The pills are for 14 days and he said by Wednesday or Thursday I should see some improvement, if... that's what the problem is. WELL, so far........she's the same. SO hope is, that by Thursday for sure she won't go out so much. She doesn't seem to go out much if she's sleeping. It appears only when she's active. There were a couple nights though where she woke me during the night to take her out. I'm still so worried about her. I pray nothing more serious is wrong. She has a great appetite and like I mentioned she's VERY playful. I'll keep you updated. Merry Christmas to you all and to your "little loved ones". :) :aimeeyork |
If your not able to get a urine sample, then the Vet can perform a cystocentisis (pass a needle through the side of the abdomen into the bladder). This is performed frequently in the vet office as outpatient procedure which means it should be really easy for the vet to get it done in a easy office call. I have had to do this several times for my one's that are to get samples from. I have never had problem with it being done. |
Yes, I had the option of doing a test to confirm ......but I can't afford that, so since the antibiotics won't harm her, we decided to go that route. |
Update on Autumn. I gave her the antibiotic for ten days as prescribed by the vet hoping she did have a urinary tract infection instead of something more serious. The pills didn't work.......she still wants to go out every 2 hrs. It's so unlike her. She just started doing this about a month a go. She sleeps during the night and if we are gone, she will not piddle in the house. It appears that when she's running around and playing or just more active other than sleeping, she has to go out more. I'm SO worried about her. The Vet did mention a worse situation which could be kidney stones. I pray she just developed a bad habit of always wanting to ring her bell to go out and that nothing more serious is wrong. Does anyone else have this kind of situation? Maybe I'm just paranoid as when she was little the vet told me she had kidney problems and it ended up they were wrong and she had food allergies. Any input is appreciated. |
Sorry to hear your baby didn't respond to the antibiotics. I would be concerned that it is something more serious (things that come to mind are diabetes, thyroid problems and Cushing's disease). Only a vet can diagnose. Unless you are giving her a treat her every time you put her out/she rings the bell. If that is the case, then she may be ringing her bell just to get a treat..... good luck! |
Took Autumn to the Vet for an ultra sound. It showed that she has Struvite crystals. She is now on a different prescription diet. I'm SO relieved that she didn't have the Calcium Oxalate crystals/stones, as those normally require surgery. Next week I have to collect another urine sample and the vet will check it once more after she's been on her new food. HOPING all goes well. |
Sorry to hear about the crystals but glad you found out what was causing her to go such much. I know it is so hard for me to get a urine sample, but I found something that works pretty well. I use a small measuring cup(1/4) with the little handle and slip it under Pixie when she is pottying. |
