Problems walking my little yorkie My little girl is almost 16 weeks old. I got her at 14. The first 3 walks she went on, she did great. I had another person walking with us. The last few walks have been awful. She won't walk away from the yard, would have to pull her to get her to move. I have been walking a few blocks, putting her down, and then she walks and heads directly back to the house. Really want to have good walks with her. I haven't had the other person with me on the last few. Don't know what to do! I have tried treats, leaving the leash and harness on her around the house, walking her in the drive way...she is a stubborn little thing! |
Best way that we got Gizmo to walk was by taking him to a dog park. He watched the other dogs. Also, we went on walkies with my Mom's dog as well. |
Don't drag... Whatever you do!!! One day Bailey had this really weird thing going on where she would not go across streets... So I pulled her because I didn't want her to get hit by a car if one would come. Now in some areas she will still walk weird. I don't know but the only advice I have is don't pull, she might later still get traumatized like my Bailey. It took her a little while for her to know that I'm not going to yank her, but stil. Don't give up! Once they are trained they are the best:) |
Try this: Take some warm chicken bits in your treat container and throw out a piece well ahead of her to get her to learn to go forward. As she gets to the treat, you will praise her for "Good walkies!" A curious dog will then look forward expecting another treat to be thrown and this will teach her to go forward away from the yard and on down the sidewalk. In time, pretend to throw a treat or just throw kibble. Eventually when your dog learns to venture forward on her own, you won't have to entice her. |
I agree with treats, or leading with a bully stick or something like that. Lead with the nose, the dog's best sensor!! The walks should always be associated with good things. Praise, treats. Just don't over-do it. A simple "good boy/girl" every once in a while, and the occasional treat is good. And ALWAYS give a treat for going potty outside. Make sure to give the treat within 30 seconds of the "good deed". Avoid carrying the dog. All this does is cater to their fear. |
She might just like short walks, due to her age she may tire fast she is still a baby :) |
She is still very young she will get better with walks as she gets older |
