Oh man! Y'all! Katie Scarlett is so in those 'teen' years! Ok, she has been doing FABULOUS on her potty training! Hasn't had an accident in weeks! Well just a bit ago, she walked onto the pad, sniffed it. Walked off the pad and over to the carpet and squatted and tee tee'd! :eek: I was shocked! She hasn't had an accident in so long!!!

So as I was cleaning up, I did get on to her. I told her that we do not tee tee on the carpet and she should be ashamed of herself. Well she started to do what we are calling 'backbarking.' It's not a loud bark. It's very quiet. Almost a muffled, low bark. Not a growl but just a quick ruff. It's like she is sass talking back at her Momma!! Can you believe that?! Little booger! She is now in time out for backbarking! Am I doing the wrong thing? I have to let her know that I am the boss (alpha so to speak) and that what I say goes. She knows what the word 'timeout' means I think. Because if she is ever in the house and does more than the 3 warning barks we allow, I look and say 'you want timeout?' and she immediately stops barking.

It's so hard to get on to her with her being so cute. LOL. Of course, I do not hit her or anything like that. I don't even yell. I just say what I need to say in a firm voice. It's all I can do not too laugh, but I am trying. :)

Ut Oh, Oh Katie Scarlett !!! Yep they can back talk. I think just telling her in a firm voice that it was No, No is Ok.

I have one that backbarks and although it's cute, I know it can't be allowed. I tell him "Do you want to go home?" He knows what it means, because he will stop:thumbup:

You are lucky you don't have a boy!! KS sounds so innocent compared to my devil boy! The other day Pnut walked outside went pee, I was standing in the kitchen- he comes over- looks at me ( as he is looking at me) HE LIFTS HIS LEG on my cabinet and pees!!!!

Bahahaha I was so shocked I wasn't even mad- that's when you KNOW your dog is pushing your luck!

Gracie taught me very quickly that telling her she did a bad thing did not work well with her. She is also one to "talk back." She is the alpha. She is quite the one to talk back to me so we have had to find other ways of dealing with issues like potty training. She was fantastic about using her pee pads from day one but when she was about 10 months old decided that peeing beside the pad worked better for her than on it. After trying to shame her out of it I found that just rewarding her for doing it right worked best and now she does it right every time. I'm kind of suspecting that it was her plan the whole time to get some treats out of me!

LOL. The only mistake I see you're making is calling what she did an "accident". That was an "on purpose":D.

Well, I'm not sure she would clearly be able to comprehend timeout. I think just a firm NO does the trick. I think the association (she's getting scolded thus she sasses back and then gets punished) is a bit too complex. A little too much anthropomorphism can turn a dog into alpha prreetty quick :)

Just tonite Kayla was laying on the foot part of the recliner and I started to get up and I touched her and said, "move Kayla" and she turned and showed her teeth and growled at me. I told her, you do not growl at your mama. I came in the computar room and she followed me. I said, "Kayla" and she looked at me right in the eye and I said "aren't you ashamed growling and showing your teeth at mama" and it looked like she actually smiled and wagged that little tail as if to say, "can't you take a joke". I don't know how to handle it and my dh said, "oh she didn't mean it". Yeah, right. I may have to try some timeouts.

Must be something in the air.... Jack always sleeps with DH and I. He usually starts out by DH and then cuddles up real close to me. When I get out of bed in the morning, he will cuddle back up to DH. Yesterday I was getting ready to leave for work and I always lean over, give DH a kiss and then kiss Jack. Well, wouldn't you know, as I was leaning over to kiss DH, Jack jumped up, growled and showed his teeth to me....:eek: I really wanted to smack him, but instead said "bad boy!" DH thought it was cute - said Jack was protecting him...I think Jack was mad that I had to leave.

Any way good luck with the little stinker - that is one thing I have found, sometimes I swear Jack does things on purpose... but they truly are cute and you can't stay mad at them longer than a nano second!

I agree it really must be something in the air...Lola is 5 months now and has not had an "accident" in the house for weeks as well, well last night she went right on the floor in front of me and DH! So she got a firm "No" and was told by my DH (who is def the alpha in the house) to go to her bed...which she did run right over and lay down...well about 5-10 min later he tells her she can come out, she comes over and gives us both kisses as if to say "Sorry"....

What are we gonna do with these little ones!!:rolleyes:

At least she's cute about it. Yesterday Gizmo pee'd on the back carpet. He came around the couch looking sheepish and I just looked at him and knew he was up to no good!
So, I looked and yup, the little brat couldn't even have done it on the wood floor that makes up our whole family room! Nope!
So while I'm cleaning it up saying "bad potty" the little brat is running around with his water bottle yellow dog toy hanging out of his mouth!:mad:

He rarely pees in the house, but last night was my fault. I got too into cleaning the bathrooms and frogot to take him out to go potty.

Every two months or so Harley pees on the bed, and he is a real "bark back"er. DRIVES me nutts.

cause he'll bark back, then cry bloody murder and then make a little gruff at me.

Good luck. Wish I could say it gets better, but Harley taught me how to fetch last month, so it hasn't gotten better in our household. lol. I'm waiting for him to introduce the girlfriend with tattoos and pink hair... (j/k).

I do what you do, I let her have her say, after all this is not a dictatorship (it is only for her daddy), but then I tell her that's not very nice and how I wouldn't dream of backtalking to MY mommy and how lucky she (my little girl) is to have a mommy who understands the pressures of teenagehood a la Yorkie:eyetearss
