Help... Hey everyone, My wife and I have a 4 1/2 year old male Yorkie named Buddy (see avatar). We never had him fixed because he had a minor shunt problem when he was examined as a baby, and then he had one undescended testy which would have cost a lot of extra money. Anyway, fast forward...and I just got my wife a YorkiePoo for Christmas. She is adorable, but Buddy WILL NOT STOP trying to hump. It is like a 24 hour a day obsession. My questions for you pros: Since she is a pup and is not giving off any "heat" type smells, is he likey to stop bugging her after a day or two? Is it unhealthy for him to be so obsessed and crazy? Will he bahave a lot better after he is fixed? We are thinking of giving her back to the breader until we get him fixed. I feel bad for the baby girl, but I feel horrible for Buddy. Thoughts? |
Neutering may help, but it is far from a guarantee. All you can do is try it (obviously you'll have to proceed very cautiously if he has a liver shunt - did his internist recommend surgery to correct it after diagnosis?). Until you get it straightened out, treat it as an undesirable behavior and make it known to him that it is not acceptable in your house. |
Instead of looking at it in a sexual way is he trying to dominate her because he is jealous of the new dog because he fears he will not be loved as much. New puppies are so cute and everybody dotes over the new baby and maybe that is why Buddy is upset? Maybe have a animal behaviorist/trainer come to the house and observe the behavior to figure out what is motivating it. Good luck and best wishes. |
If the vet thinks it is ok to get him fix and he is healthy enough I would get him fixed making sure to get blood work done first and then when your puppy is old enough I would get her spayed before her first heat. |
if he's able to be fixed and still healthy after the surgery i would fix him right away. that way you know it's not hormones it's all dominance for sure. if you can't fix him I would defin make sure that the baby girl is kept away and spayed LONG before her heat could possibly happen just so she doesn't get pregnant. she may not be in heat now, but he could seriously hurt her if he ties to her young body when she's too little it may really hurt her |
