Refuses to Walk Anymore So Millhouse loved going for walks. Last week we went to the beach and he had a great time walking. All of a sudden, I am now struggling to get him to go for any walks. It has been really cold lately and he hates it. When we take him out to potty, he goes so fast and then wants to go back in. Today is a really nice day, sun out, breeze, so I got him to walk but he refused and sat down when we got to the corner of street. I have no idea what to do. I had to keep going in circles for 20mins to get him to walk. We would walk back to the house but I would cross the street and walk the other way and then cross again and come back to the house. |
Combine the dislike of being cold and cleverness, and you end up with one like Dinky. He walks like a champ unless the weather is pretty cold. Then he wants to be carried and be tucked into our jackets! I make him sweaters out of my DH's socks, and that helps, but somedays he gets carried until we turn around to go home. At that point, he scurries home as fast as he can. I guess it's okay because we don't mind. He also refuses to walk if he needs a nap. I can't blame him for that. I'm the same way.:) |
Do you have him dressed for the weather, so he doesn't get cold? I can't keep mine in!:D |
Maybe you could carry him away from the house (keeping it visible) and see if he will walk home. Make sure he's warm, and also check out the pads on his feet... maybe the surface you're walking him on hurting his feet? |
Shoot - with the cold weather we've been having, I have a hard time getting me to go out for a walk:D Gracie is pad trained so doesn't need to go out except for exercise, but lately we've been throwing her ball around the house to get her running (which isn't hard). I just found a good coat for her today, so we'll try it outside again tomorrow, if it's not pouring down rain. Now, if I can justify spending the $$ for a new coat for myself..... |
It depends on how cold it is but mine will only go out to go potty in real cold weather. That though is mainly because I dont push it because I dont like to go out in the real cold weather. We have a treadmill they can walk in the winter for exercise |
Going for walks in cold weather Yorkies are warm weather dogs. Most of them don't like the cold, altho my baby loves running around in snow, diving in and out of piles. But at the same time, she will put off going out to pee when it's cold and pees on the carpet instead, grrrr. Occasionally when we go out to walk, she'll suddenly come to a dead stop. There are certain places like homes in the area with big loud dogs she won't go past. So I pick her up and carry her a 1/2 block or block, put her down and she's good to go again, lol. |
Or try him at Petsmart or Petco and just walk around the store... |

Millhouse does have his little red sweater so he's covered. Today I walked with him as I carried him to the corner of the block and we walked back. We did this a few times. Then, yesterday at Petsmart he walked through every single aisle of the store which was great. Inside the house, we have hardwood floor and we chased him around. In the mornings when I take him out, he pees and poops so fast and then he runs back to the door and cleans his paws on the mat. We rush back in and he gets into his bed and blanket. |

I say treats. Take them with you. |
I have a harder time getting Jackson to walk in the hot weather  In the cold, he will go for miles. In the heat, not so much. He can't stand walks if it's above 80-85, lol. But whenever weather is just not good walking weather- we try to take a trip to Petsmart, or another pet store, etc, so at least he gets some interaction and a bit of exercise. We also find games to play inside (fetch, hide n seek, etc). But otherwise, I would just encourage walking and make it a positive thing. When it's hot (but not sooo hot, like I know he won't overheat)- I just bring water and keep him going, although we don't go as long. I've always liked to encourage him in general to try new things, be confident, etc... if there's a big tree trunk fallen down, I encourage him to jump on it, if there's something in our way, I get him to jump OVER it, etc, etc, I love giving him new experiences and gaining more confidence and I think it's the same sort of thing in weather they dislike. Just keep encouraging and don't give up and carry them because that's what they want! Dress warmly and on your way you go :) |
