Cage Question Our Yorkie is months and weighs 6lbs. We have him 2 weeks, we have the petco model 200 pet crate for night time. I think it's too small, but I was told by some friends that it should not be to big. He can barley turn around. The next size up is the 400 series 24" long 18" wide. Should we keep the 200 series or get the next size up? TIA |
I don't know anything about those crates, but I am pretty sure that the general rule is that they have enough space to stand up and turn around comfortably in. Have you considered other brands/types of crates? The website says the crate is good for up to 10lbs, but that is not always the best thing to go by. If he is going to get bigger (you didn't actually put a number before the months for his age) and hecan barely turn around now, I would personally look for a bigger crate for the time being. When we got a crate for Sophie when she was a puppy we were told to buy the size she would need as adult and use something to block off the extra space so the crate can grow with the dog. I looked at the website and the model 400 comes with a divder so you would be able to make the crate the size that is most comfortable for him by using that. So if he is going to keep growing and can barely turn around now I would either get the bigger one and block off the extra space or I would look for a different brand of crate and see if they have an in between size. I would go bigger, but try to get a cage that has a divider so that you can keep his sleeping area small. He should only have enough room to stand and turn around, it discourages them from going potty in the cage. I think the 18' x 24' would be big enough. That is the same size cage that I use. |

Here is the crate that I use for my yorkie (when I absolutely have to crate her): Midwest iCrate Double Door Folding Dog Crates I like it because it comes with the divider so you can block off some of the extra space to help with preventing them from going to the bathroom inside the kennel. |
hello I have the same crate, I have to crate her for a about 2hours which is usually the time that my hubby leaves and I get home from work. Do you crate your baby at night? Brooklyn is only 3 mos but I hate kicking her out of her lil bed that she loves so much. What should I do? |

I thought the little one was way too small and claustrophobic and got the next size up, which we use only for sleeping and gives Smokey plenty of room. He has never messed in it. BTW, born in Brooklyn, spent my early years in Bayside with lots of pix of me digging away in the sandbox at Alley Pond Park. :>) |
