Question please I have enjoyed this forum because there are so many knowledgeable people on it. This may be a stupid question but I have heard that if the roof of your dogs mouth is black he is a pure bred. I find this hard to believe but figured if anyone knew it would be you. The Yorkie I got from the shelter the roof of his mouth is black. Does this mean he is a Yorkie and not a mix as we originally thought? I have been combing him everyday and it appears to my untrained eye and feel that the roots of the black hair on his heard are tan and softer. The roots of the hair on the body is a grey/blue and they also appear to be softer than the wiry puppy hair. I read that this could mean his hair on his head will be tan and on his back blue and he MIGHT be able to grow a long coat. I have always wanted a long hair Yorkie but did not go looking for one...he found us in the shelter. He is so cute just as he is and as every day more of his personality comes out and it appears he is going to be as sweet as he is cute. My husband and I are thrilled. But after reading on the internet it has me wondering: Could he possible be a pure bred just one that doesn't make the cut for showing or breeding? Any opinions will be welcomed. |
The roof of the mouth has nothing to do if purebred yorkie. Can you post a picture of him. There are alot of purebred yorkies that have not been bred to the yorkie standard that dont have a typical yorkie look |
Do you know, I think I read somewhere too about the roof of the mouth being black in a purebred (pedigree over here!!) dog? Think I'd best get searching!! :) Sally + Harry x |
This should be fairly easy to research. Everyone grab your pup and look them in the mouth. ;) |
3 Attachment(s) I didn't think so....just didn't sound right. Here are some pictures we have only had him since 12/2/11. Not sure why the pictures are sideways they are upright in my folder. Well except for the one lying by his father on the couch. |

I would definitely say your baby is a mix, but he's adorable! Oh btw, the top of my babies mouths are black... What about everyone else? (They weren't too keen on me seeing the tops of their mouths :p) |

Rizzo's look like a dark grey...interesting never thought to look at the roof of his mouth before. He didn't like it, lol. |
Tashi's is gray |
Annies is black!!! |
The roof of Kiko's mouth is dark. |
He may be a Schnauzer-Yorkie, but based on some of my fosters, he looks like a Chorkie to me (especially those long legs and ears). He will look more "Yorkie" as his fur grows out, and you get it cut into a "Yorkie face" style. Anyway, I just wanted to say congratulations on bringing home your new baby. Rescue dogs are wonderful, and your new baby sounds just perfect. I'm so glad you found each other. May you have a long, loving, happy life together. Enjoy the holidays with your new baby! |
The roof of Norman's mouth is black with a touch of pink...he REALLY didn't want to show it to me! lol |
Don't know what he is but he sure is cute! |
Hello I rarely post on this site, but, I know a sure way to tell if your doggie is purebred is to look at his eyes. If they look like he has eyeliner all the way around, that's a purebred. |
I have heard the black mouth thing before too. Never the eye thing though?? Her eyes are like a light grey all the way around? And her mouth is black. |

It has been a week since we got our baby and he has found his "forever" home. I wish everyone would realize what great pets you can find at the shelter. Training has gone better than we expected. Only one yes I said one accident in the house and that was my husband's fault. Gizmo came to him at 5:45am and knowing he should take him right out he put him on the bed and started to play with him. Bad Daddy!!! I am sure it helps that we are both retired and can devote our entire attention to training. We have not had a puppy for at least 14 years. WE LOVE IT. He found a toy our other dog had hide and we had not seen for months. We are working on come, stay, sit, bad bark and good bark. He found my shoes ooops up they went, tore up tissues, I put them a little higher. Seeing our house with puppy eyes has been interesting. I totally agree that he is Probaby a Yorkie/Chi mix BUT WHAT HE REALLY IS.......IS THE PERFECT DOG FOR US. Thank you for all your help now and in the future. I will continue to send picture as he grows. Our Vet said he is over 6 months for sure but he was not sure he was as old as 11 months. |
I was thinking Chi cross as soon as I saw the pics and before I read any comments/posts lol. He is very cute! And because of the mix it IS possible he could grow a longer softer coat like a long haired chi or a yorkie. I have a friend who's pomchi looks JUST like a pom as a pup, not he's a few months old and has shed almost all the pom coat and looks like a long haired chi with a silky flatter coat. Crazy how puppies change! |
You can have a genetics test done on him at the vet or you can purchas a "at home" test. I think that they are about $50 and it will tell you if there is more than one breed in your baby's gene pool and what they are. |
